How to permanently get rid of cockroaches in an apartment?

A complex approach

Traditional methods will be effective with an integrated approach to getting rid of cockroaches. You need to choose several methods to use at once.

For example, treat the surface with aromatic oils, skipping small intervals. Place poisonous baits on them.

For a long-term positive result, you need to remove cockroaches together with your neighbors. This is especially true for apartment buildings.

Otherwise, they will migrate from apartment to apartment through sewer and water pipes.

Traditional recipes for cockroaches

You can get rid of cockroaches in a house or apartment using effective folk remedies. But it is worth understanding that their use is justified only when the number of insects is small, since when pests multiply massively, they are not able to give the desired result.

Application of boric acid

This component is a powerful antiseptic. When boric acid enters the body of a cockroach, it leads to dehydration and causes the death of beneficial microflora, which disrupts the functioning of the digestive organs.

Directions for use:

  1. Boil a soft-boiled chicken egg. Remove the shell and knead with your hand until smooth. Mix 10-15 g of boric acid with an egg and roll the resulting mass into a thin layer on wax paper, dry until solid. Cut the poison into strips and spread it in all rooms.
  2. Peel raw potatoes and grate them. Mix the resulting mass with 10 g of boric acid. Place on cardboard supports every 3-5 m.
  3. Combine boric acid with powdered sugar in a ratio of 1:3. Spread the powder in a thin layer on the baseboards, in the trash can area, in the corners, and near the joints of sewer pipes.

Pureed chamomile inflorescences

You can also cope with the invasion of cockroaches in the house with the help of Dalmatian chamomile, which contains pyrethrum. To do this, you can place fresh or dried inflorescences of the plant around the house or prepare an infusion. To do this, add 100 g of chamomile to 500 ml of hot water and leave for 5 hours.

After the time has passed, strain the product and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the infusion into places where insects accumulate.

Onions and soda

To kill cockroaches, it is recommended to cut the peeled onion into pieces and sprinkle them with baking soda. Spread the product in all rooms and renew it every week until the signs of pest activity disappear.

Essential oil drops

These products have a repellent effect on insects. To combat cockroaches, it is recommended to add 10 drops of essential oil to the detergent, and then dilute this mixture with 5 liters of water. Use the resulting solution for wet cleaning. Also, to fight cockroaches, you need to soak cotton pads in the product and place them throughout the apartment, renewing them periodically.

Effective essential oils against cockroaches:

  • citrus fruits;
  • conifers;
  • geraniums;
  • lemongrass;
  • lemon eucalyptus;
  • verbena.

Homemade traps

This is the safest method of dealing with uninvited guests. You can make trap structures using available materials.

Possible options:

  1. Cut off 1/3 of the plastic bottle. Turn it over and insert it upside down into the base. Place food bait inside. Grease the inner surface of the container generously with vegetable oil. Using the same principle, you can make a trap from a glass jar.
  2. Take a small cardboard box and cover its inner surface with double-sided tape, and put bait in the center. Make small holes through which cockroaches can enter the trap.

Cleaning with ammonia or vinegar

Ammonia or vinegar can force cockroaches to leave a house or apartment. After all, the pungent odor of these components is not tolerated by household insects. For this you need 1 tbsp. l. add any product to 8 liters of water, and then thoroughly wash the floors in all rooms with the solution. Repeat the procedure if necessary every 2 days.

Repeller made from a mixture of kerosene and turpentine

A product based on kerosene and turpentine also helps to get rid of cockroaches forever. To do this, you will need to mix these components in equal quantities and, using a brush, apply the mixture to surfaces in places where pests may accumulate and move. The layer needs to be updated once every 2 weeks until the signs of household insects disappear.

Pyrethrum

This component has a detrimental effect on synanthropic insects. It is found in large quantities in chrysanthemum flowers. To prepare an effective remedy, you need to pour 100 g of inflorescences into 1 liter of water and boil for 20 minutes. After cooling, strain the product. Use the resulting solution for disinfestation.

Borax

The peculiarity of this component is that it destroys the insect’s nervous system, which causes paralysis and then death. To prepare the poison, you need to mix borax, sugar, gelatin, and flour. Then pour the toxic bait onto sheets of paper and spread it around the apartment.

Gypsum

To kill cockroaches in the house, you can use plaster or alabaster. In this case, it needs to be mixed with flour in the same proportion and poured in secluded places where cockroaches appear, and place a saucer of water next to it. After eating this mixture, plaster or alabaster will harden inside the cockroach and block the functioning of the food organs, which will cause death.

Homemade traps

Specialized stores sell traps for cockroaches, which are a structure with holes for entry and the impossibility of getting out from the inside. It's expensive, and craftsmen have come up with homemade traps that are no less effective.

The main advantage is that cockroaches come running to the bait, there is no intoxication of the human body. The downside is that you have to remove cockroaches from the structure.

Sticky traps

This design involves the use of only 2 materials - double-sided tape and a piece of cardboard / paper, etc. The principle of the sticky “trap” is simple - the cockroach is directed to the bait food, stepping on the sticky base with its paws, as a result of which it sticks.

Manufacturing process:

  1. Cut a rectangle of any length from cardboard.
  2. Cut a piece of tape so that its length on both sides is 2-3 cm shorter than the size of the cardboard.
  3. Glue the sticky material to the base.
  4. Place the bait in the central part of the tape. This could be sugar, vanilla, bread crumbs, jam, honey or any other food scraps.
  5. Place sticky traps out of the reach of children and pets.

From the bottle

The plastic bottle trap is based on the fact that a little sweet water is poured inside the structure, the Prussians climb inside in search of liquid, but cannot get back out.

What you will need:

  • plastic bottle;
  • water;
  • scissors;
  • sweetness.

How to do it yourself:

  1. Draw a transverse line along the container just above the middle.
  2. Cut the bottle into 2 parts.
  3. Pour sweetened water into the bottom (mix with sugar or jam).
  4. Turn the top part upside down and in this position insert it into the base with liquid.
  5. Place the trap anywhere.

Cockroaches love beer and sweet store-bought drinks, kefir and milk. These products can replace water.

From a can

A simple way to catch cockroaches using an ordinary glass jar. The trap works identically to the previous method, only dry food is placed inside, not water.

What materials are needed:

  • capacity 0.5, 0.7 or 1 l;
  • fat base – Vaseline, sunflower oil;
  • scissors;
  • single-sided tape;
  • a piece of fabric or paper (raw materials that make it easier for insects to climb into the container).

Manufacturing instructions:

  1. Prepare a glass jar - cut a piece of paper (anti-slip) to fit its volume, wrap it, and secure it with tape.
  2. Place bait inside - a little jam, leftover food, sugar, etc.
  3. On the inside, lubricate the glass 2-3 cm from the neck with an oil base.
  4. Place it in areas where cockroaches gather.

To avoid wrapping the container, you can attach a strip of paper from the neck to the floor vertically with tape.

Trap houses

If you hate to look at a bunch of insects caught in a trap every day, build a “house” with your own hands. To do this you will need the following:

  • Double-sided tape;
  • scissors;
  • a small cardboard box (for parcels, sweets, shoes, etc.).

How to make:

  1. Make holes of any shape on the sides and roof of the box.
  2. Place tape on the entire bottom of the box from the inside.
  3. Place bait food in some places.
  4. Close the lid and leave it in the room.

Cockroaches, having entered such a house (and they will do this with pleasure thanks to the bait and darkness inside), will stick their paws to the tape and will no longer be able to leave.

What are the remedies for cockroaches?

The range of chemicals for killing these harmful insects is quite wide. Among them there are ready-made preparations and those requiring preliminary preparation before use. Depending on this, the method of their use differs.

Chalk

It has a powdery compressed consistency of white or gray tint. Available in the form of a chalk or pencil. Has a delayed contact action. In addition to active toxic substances, it contains chalk and gypsum, which act as binding components and impart the necessary hardness.

To destroy cockroaches, use a chalk or pencil to apply dotted lines or solid lines at least 3 cm wide on the surface in places where pests move. After contact, the active component penetrates the body, which causes death.

Aerosol

It has a liquid consistency and is sold in cylinders equipped with a convenient sprayer, which allows you to quickly poison cockroaches. On sale you can find aerosols and sprays, the difference of which lies in the size of the particles of the insecticidal solution formed during spraying. The peculiarity of aerosols is that they have a detrimental effect on cockroaches through the respiratory tract and through direct contact. However, they have a short protective period of no more than 1 week.

Sprays have a slightly different effect. After spraying, their particles quickly settle on the surface and form a dense insecticidal film. Its destructive effect lasts for 2-8 weeks, depending on the type of drug. It is necessary to spray sprays and aerosols in places where insects accumulate, as well as their possible habitat.

Cruciferous flea beetle in the garden: 4 safe ways to control the pest

Gel

It is a liquid suspension of transparent color with a thick consistency. Sold in 30 ml syringes. This allows you to apply it precisely to the places where cockroaches are supposed to be located on vertical and horizontal surfaces. It has a delayed effect, and the death of insects occurs 3-5 days after contact with the gel. This form is recommended when the number of pests is small, also as a preventive measure.

Paste

These preparations for killing cockroaches have a thick paste-like consistency and are sold in tubes resembling toothpaste. The product is odorless, but contains components that attract the attention of pests. Characterized by contact action and ready for use.

Before applying the paste to the surface, it is recommended to hold the tube in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up. This is necessary to soften the consistency. The protective effect lasts for 3-4 weeks. When cockroaches multiply massively in an apartment, it is recommended to combine the paste with aerosols.

Powder

This form of release of insecticidal preparations has a crystalline powdery consistency of a light shade. The dust has no specific odor and is sold in sealed bags of 50 or 200 g. It is ready for use and does not require preliminary preparation. But its disadvantage is that it can generate dust and requires increased precautions. It is acceptable to use dust in combination with gel and aerosols.

Capsules

Products for killing cockroaches in residential areas are also available in the form of capsules or poisonous lens tablets. They do not require preliminary preparation before use. They need to be placed in places where pests accumulate. This form of release has an intestinal effect, as it contains components that attract the attention of insects. After the active components enter the cockroach’s body, they block the transmission of nerve impulses from the brain to the limbs, which causes paralysis and then death.

Balloons

Anti-cockroach medications can be in the form of pellets or granules. They are completely ready for use and contain not only toxic components, but also substances that attract the attention of insects. To bait cockroaches, you need to pour the drug onto sheets of paper and place the bait in all rooms of the apartment.

Traps

They are considered not only effective, but also safe. Traps are a plastic structure with holes. Through them, cockroaches penetrate inside, where the toxic bait is located. The traps are securely attached to horizontal and vertical surfaces using Velcro. After eating the poison, the insect remains active for several days and transmits it to its fellows, causing mass death.

Also on sale are traps in the form of glue houses. They are a cardboard box. It contains bait inside, next to which there is a sticky tape. Once an insect gets inside, it can no longer get out.

Concentrates

They are a highly concentrated suspension that may have a yellowish tint and a rich, specific odor. To prepare a working solution, these preparations must first be diluted with water, according to the attached instructions. After this, the product should be sprayed indoors.

Particular attention should be paid to:

  • skirting boards;
  • areas near the trash can;
  • under the sink;
  • joints of water pipes.

Concentrates are usually used by professional services due to their high level of toxicity. After their use, the room must be kept closed for several hours, and sometimes days.

Repellers

They are devices that, when turned on, emit ultrasound. It has a depressing effect on cockroaches, which forces them to go in search of new favorable living conditions. Such devices do not harm human health or pets, but only guarantee protection during operation, which does not exclude the possibility of pests returning.

Fog

Professional services are used to treat residential premises. Disinsection can be carried out with cold and hot fog, which is generated using special compressors

As a result, small particles of the insecticidal solution mix with air when exiting through the nozzle. This leads to the formation of droplets.

During treatment, the fog fills the entire space in the room, and also penetrates into all the cracks and secluded places where cockroaches can hide. After spraying, the particles remain in the air for up to 10 hours, which is enough to destroy pests and their larvae.

Benefits of using fog:

  • the entire volume of the room is processed, including the ceiling;
  • high safety for people and animals;
  • safety of things and furniture in case of contact with the product;
  • immediate effect on parasites;
  • high efficiency.

Checker

This cockroach repellent is a simple cylinder-shaped design. The basis is dry matter containing toxins. After activation, smoke begins to be released, which has a detrimental effect on parasites. It penetrates into hard-to-reach places where pests usually hide. Some checkers begin to emit smoke upon contact with water, while others emit smoke after lighting the fuse. The principle of action of checkers is similar to fog.

The most popular brands and manufacturers

On the market you can now find dozens of different drugs for killing cockroaches.
The TOP 5 most famous companies producing poison look like this.

  1. Raid is a brand owned by the American holding company Johnson and Son. 3. "Raptor" is another domestic manufacturer that produces various insect control products. The quality of the products is always at its best.
  4. "Agrovit" is the creator of the famous chalk "Mashenka". Produces various household chemicals, including insecticides.
  5. Gektor is a brand that focuses its efforts on creating insect repellents that meet modern requirements for safety and effectiveness.

Causes of cockroaches

A person’s home has all the conditions for these pests to live. After all, it contains warmth and nutrition. And, if cockroaches appear in the house, then getting rid of them is not so easy, because they are characterized by increased vitality. And only comprehensive treatment can help clear your home of these annoying insects.

Cockroaches are particularly agile and are able to enter the house through any small opening. Initially, pests appear in the basement, and then spread throughout the house in search of food.

The appearance of cockroaches can be caused by untimely removal of food waste and the regular presence of dirty dishes in the sink. Pests are able to move from neighbors through the ventilation hole and cracks if they have carried out the treatment. Moreover, initially one scout cockroach goes in search of better living conditions. And subsequently the entire colony is resettled.

Pests are also able to enter the house through an open door to the entrance, in a bag with things after a business trip, with newly purchased furniture, inside household appliances and with parcels.

Preparing to apply measures

In order for independent measures to exterminate cockroaches to give the desired result, you need to prepare housing before carrying out them.

Not all folk remedies are as harmless as they might seem. Some of them can cause allergies and even poisoning.

Therefore, if you plan to poison cockroaches with drugs dangerous to human health and pets, then it is better to temporarily transport children and animals to another place during the period of work to exterminate pests.

Other preparation measures are considered mandatory regardless of the chosen method:

  1. Check water pipes and taps for leaks and remove defects to deprive cockroaches of a source of water.
  2. Remove personal hygiene items from the bathroom and keep sinks and the bathtub dry at all times.
  3. Conduct a general cleaning of kitchen cabinets, removing all contents, including dishes. Wipe the inside with vinegar.
  4. Move the lower cabinets, gas stove, and refrigerator away from the walls in the kitchen. Check to see if there are any traces of cockroaches or nests on their back walls.
  5. If the apartment has plastic skirting boards, they must be removed and washed. Wash wooden elements from dust and dirt.
  6. Check the wallpaper that has fallen off the walls for nests, treat the walls underneath with “Whiteness” and glue it on. In cases where repairs are planned soon, it is better to simply tear them off.
  7. Sweep and thoroughly clean floors.

When starting the fight against parasites, you should clean the room.

Prevention of the problem

It will not be possible to get rid of cockroaches forever if you do not follow preventive measures. After all, chemicals and folk remedies can give temporary results, but they cannot eliminate the possibility of these annoying pests reappearing in the house.

Wet cleaning

When carrying out wet cleaning, it is recommended to periodically add essential oils or vinegar. You should also thoroughly wipe all secluded places, as cockroaches do not tolerate cleanliness.

Removing food debris

Do not leave food crumbs or leftovers on the table. After all, this is a food source for cockroaches. The lack of free access to food will force insects to go in search of more favorable living conditions.

Trash Bin Insulation

In everyday life, you should use a trash can with a tight-fitting lid. This will prevent insects from getting inside. You should also take the bucket out regularly and rinse thoroughly each time, which will eliminate the possibility of food waste smelling.

Application of funds

Sometimes insecticides should be used to prevent re-infection. For this, traps and gels containing slow-acting poisons are best suited. They also guarantee a long period of protection and eliminate the possibility of mass reproduction.

Eliminating paths

To forget about cockroaches forever, you need to eliminate the ways they enter the house. These nimble insects are able to enter a person’s home through cracks in the floor and walls. In this case, you need to carry out cosmetic repairs and seal all the holes. Insects also enter the apartment through the ventilation. And to prevent this, it is necessary to seal the hatches with a fine mesh, through the holes of which the pest will not be able to get through.

The use of special means cannot completely eliminate the likelihood of cockroaches appearing in your home, but reduces it to a minimum. But such drugs must be used taking into account the instructions for use and without exceeding the dosage specified by the manufacturer. Otherwise, disinfestation may negatively affect the well-being of all residents of the house.

How dangerous are they?

Cockroaches do not bite and are generally afraid of people. There is no visible harm, but the dirt they bring will not leave you in good health. They examine the garbage in search of food, the toilet in search of water, then they carry a bunch of different bacteria around the apartment on their paws, leaving them on children's toys, on furniture and, worst of all, on the table and cutlery.

For some people, the activity of insects may not have any effect, while others may be seriously poisoned. Bacteria are different, each body reacts to them individually, so you should not let cockroaches multiply and run wherever they please.

It is better to start baiting them in the first days, as soon as you notice them. Cockroaches live for approximately 6–8 months, and during this time the female can lay 320 eggs. The more of them there are, the harder it is to get rid of the brood later.

Some tricks

In the centuries-old fight against domestic insects, man has accumulated a lot of experience and many tricks to defeat his mustachioed opponent.

It has been noticed that cockroaches do not like wormwood. Its branches can be placed in cabinets. It is good to put the dried wormwood in gauze bags and distribute them on the food shelves.

By the way, its aroma reduces headaches and normalizes blood pressure.

It is good to add a decoction of wormwood to the water for washing floors; this will also serve as a repellent against cockroaches, but will not smell strongly like vinegar.

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects and do not like light. If you leave the light bulbs on in the kitchen, they will gradually leave this “inhospitable” place for them. This trick only works on a small number of insects.

House parasites do not like spicy foods. This method of fighting is based on this. Any hot sauce, such as soy sauce, needs to be diluted with a little water. Wipe the habitats of cockroaches with this mixture, which will not like such a treat.

Sometimes there are unwashed dishes left in the sink. To prevent cockroaches from eating leftover food from it, I sprinkle it with chamomile powder from the pharmacy - pyrethrum. Noticed - cockroaches are not suitable. Of course, the dishes need to be washed right away, but with a small child it’s not always possible. Chamomile is harmless to people, I wash it off in the morning, everything is fine.
