How to assemble a duck decoy and use it correctly when hunting

Any (even a novice) hunter knows that it is not enough to just arm yourself with a gun and go into the forest to hunt for game. Each animal or bird requires a special approach to itself. One of the important elements of hunting is the use of bait and decoys. For example, duck hunting cannot take place without the use of a duck decoy. So it’s worth stocking up on this tool in advance. You can purchase it at a specialized hunting store, or you can make it yourself (which is sometimes cheaper and more effective). There are several ways to make a duck decoy with your own hands. For each of them you will need a certain set of tools and materials, so prepare them in advance.

How to make a duck decoy with your own hands?

Duck decoy: why is it used and is it necessary to take it when hunting?

Before you start making your own decoy with your own hands, you need to basically understand the following issues:

  • What is a decoy for?
  • Is this device necessary for duck hunting?

A decoy is a fairly simple device that imitates the voices of ducks and other animals. It is easy to guess that it is used to lure as many birds as possible to where a person is hiding.

Every first hunter who is asked whether a decoy is required will immediately give a positive answer. Although a decoy is not necessary for hunting in principle, that is, you can do without it, it can still give the hunter a serious advantage, and also make the hunt much easier.

There are some features of the device that must be taken into account when operating it:

  • It is risky to use a decoy all the time, as this can scare away the prey. It is necessary to make several short and loud sounds quite rarely, and then wait for the birds;
  • Duck decoys are most effective early in the morning and late in the evening;
  • Even if you use a high-quality device, it is impossible to achieve maximum benefit from the decoy without proper camouflage. It is necessary to stick to neutral shades in clothes, and also create a concealment;
  • the lowest efficiency of using semolina is achieved in September. Its use at this time of year is practically useless.

As you can see, this tool is extremely useful and effective , it can be called the right hand of a duck hunter. However, like any other device, it has its own characteristics of use that must be observed.

The device can be made in many ways; in this article we will analyze the simplest and most popular ones.

How to attract a bird correctly

Some novice hunters are interested in how to properly decoy a duck in the spring. You can do this as follows:

  • The sounds made by the decoy must imitate the voices of females of exactly the same species as the drake being hunted. In the spring season, several different species can be found simultaneously. Accordingly, at this time of year it is necessary to stock up on a wide variety of stuffed animals.
  • You can use an ordinary decoy duck instead of a stuffed animal. Some hunters breed them specifically in order to later use them during hunting.
  • As for the stuffed animals, they need to be placed randomly. They will create the appearance as if a flock has landed on the water. There is no need to place them in rows. This may scare away the drake.
  • In an ambush you need to sit at a distance of approximately 15 m. Moreover, this distance should be to the farthest stuffed animal. The bird itself should be placed on a strong leash, the length of which is approximately 1 meter greater than the depth of the reservoir.
  • The decoy duck must be positioned so that it faces the hunter. At the same time, her leash had to be very thin, always strong, and as for the load, the house had to be sufficient to be able to keep it in the water. One kilogram is enough. Stuffed animals can be placed on the sides of the decoy duck. But at the same time, it is imperative to ensure that the leashes do not get tangled. As soon as the ducks approach, the hunter should begin to make several staccato quacks. Thus, it imitates the voice of ducks of this species. And the decoy duck will attract the mallard drakes. It is better not to imitate their voice.

Some people are interested in: how to properly attract a duck with a wind decoy? A lot depends on how well the hunter uses the decoy. A decoy duck is good for hunting, but it is not always possible to get it out of a pond later, and a stuffed duck is the most ideal option.

Duck decoy from a cartridge case

This method does not require virtually any resources or effort. All you need to prepare is an old brass sleeve and a small piece of fluoroplastic. Once these materials are prepared, the manufacture of the device can begin .

  1. Using a drill with a diameter of 6.6 cm, it is necessary to drill out the sleeve socket. Be careful, it is very important to get a smooth surface without any burrs, this will make it easy for you to quickly restrict the air flow with your finger.
  2. Now the emery will come in handy; with its help you need to make a neat cut on the surface of the sleeve at a small angle.
  3. If there are any burrs left, remove them with a round file. The width of the resulting hole should be no more than 1.2 cm.
  4. Cut a small piece from the fluoroplastic. Its height should be equal to its diameter.
  5. Remove a chamfer of about 2 - 2.5 mm across the entire surface of the fluoroplastic. This must be done with a sharp knife.
  6. One end of the fluoroplastic needs to be removed at a slight angle. The result should be that one end of the material should be equal to the size of the hole in the sleeve, and the other end should be much wider.
  7. Now you need to insert the resulting part into the hole in the sleeve.
  8. Place a needle file into the capsule socket. With it you can adjust the position of the plug in the semolina. Thus, it is necessary to achieve a sound as close as possible to the voice of birds.
  9. Just in case, you can fix the fluoroplastic with superglue, however, even without this it should sit there quite tightly.

That's all. A duck decoy made from one old cartridge case and fluoroplastic is absolutely ready. You can immediately go hunting with it. As you can see, it is not at all necessary to buy a decoy in a store; it is very easy to make it yourself.

What should you do next?

At this stage, the bone is degreased. Acetone is ideal for this purpose. Then equip one end of the bone with an even perpendicular cut, and the other end with an angled cut. Next, the workpiece is equipped with a sound hole. If the internal diameter of the bone is 4 mm, then the width of the hole should be within 2.5 mm. Like the semolina from an insulin syringe, this device should also have a threshold through which you can adjust the sound. Craftsmen make the threshold from wax. Using two drill diameters of the required size, this element is pushed into the bone so much that it protrudes a third beyond the hole.

Duck decoy from an insulin syringe

For the most affordable and simple do-it-yourself duck decoy, you will need the following materials:

  • insulin syringe
  • plastic pencil

Tools:

  • stationery knife

The entire work process is shown in the video:

The result should be a duck decoy like this.

Duck decoys, wind and electronic

Duck decoys can be either electronic or wind. Hunting with electronic decoys is prohibited by the current hunting rules; in addition, wind decoys sound much better and more realistic than electronic decoys, and hunting with them is much more interesting. A real, self-respecting duck hunter should hunt only with a blow decoy.

Duck decoy device

A duck decoy consists of the following components:

  • Horn
  • Tone board (which has an audio channel)
  • Wedge (used to fix semolina tongues)
  • Reeds (the number of reeds depends on the decoy model)
  • Mouthpiece

American manufacturers of duck decoys make decoys of two different designs: “Arkansas” and “Louisiana”. In an Arkansas-type decoy, the horn and tone board are a single piece. On Louisiana decoys, the tone board and bugle are two separate parts. There is no difference between the two types of decoys in terms of sound; Arkansas type decoys are considered somewhat easier to care for.

Imitation techniques

There are many ways to imitate natural signals. For example, to lure a black grouse, some hunters skillfully cluck and, while clapping their palms on the tops of their boots, imitate the flapping of the wings of a scythe. In a certain way, by exhaling air into folded palms brought to the mouth, you can imitate the voices of various game birds. Various items are used for the same purpose:

  • a vibrating leaf or blade of grass held between the fingers;
  • a comb, which, if you run a sliver of wood along it, imitates the sharp cry of a corncrake.

A special category of decoys includes specially made devices that incorporate centuries of hunting experience. For example, hazel grouse decoys are very popular among hunters. They are made from twigs, wire, plastic, bone, the body of an ordinary ballpoint pen and tin.

Making semolina

The body for the structure is usually made on a lathe from a small piece of wood. It is necessary to carve a cylinder, the diameter of which will be 2 cm, and its length 8-9 cm. It is necessary to mark a center line along the longitudinal side.

Next, you need to step back 4-5 cm from the edge of the workpiece and make oblique cuts on both sides of the center line. After this you will need to use a vice. The cylinder is clamped into them and sawed in two to end up with two half-cylinders with a beveled edge.

Making a decoy for a hazel grouse, duck or other bird with your own hands is very simple. After cutting into two parts, you need to make a round groove in each of them. The wall thickness should remain no more than 2-3 mm. The cut area must be rounded, not bringing it to the edges by 3-4 mm. Because of this, the depth of the gutter will be reduced to zero. Next, you will need to connect both halves together and fix them in such a position so that you can process the outer part without any problems. Since to use the device you will have to put it in your mouth, you need to get rid of all the unevenness, roughness, polish and keep the outside clean.

Homemade gas canister

An empty used CO2 can from a siphon or air gun, weighing from 7 to 12 g, is suitable. Make a decoy from a can as follows.

  1. We squeeze the balloon in a vice and drill a small hole in the mouth. A 3 - 4.5 mm drill is used.
  2. Cut off the “butt”. You should get a flat surface with a diameter of 12 mm.
  3. We pierce a hole in the jumper of the bottom of the cylinder.
  4. Using a round file, we grind the hole to a round hole. We hold the file strictly perpendicular to the bottom plane.
  5. Use a flat file to level the bottom, getting rid of burrs.

That's it, the homemade product is ready. Now let's try to practice with her.

Homemade decoy from a gas canister

Holding the decoy with your palm, try to play it with the finger of your other hand, as if you were playing a pipe. Make sure that the vibrating finger does not move the decoy so that the sound is not distorted.

Practice at home before you go hunting.

Wrap the craft with electrical tape, attaching a cord at the same time: this will make it easier to put it around your neck. Electrical tape will protect your palms and mouth from discomfort when coming into contact with cold metal.

What materials are decoys made from?

The materials for decoys are different: they include plastic (polycarbonate), acrylic, wood, and their combination. The highest quality decoy is made from acrylic: it stands out in terms of timbre, is more sonorous, is resistant to weather changes, is less hassle to use and, moreover, it looks amazing. The wooden decoy gives a hoarse sound, it is also beautiful, because it is made from valuable species of ebony, cocobolo, and rosewood, but it must be kept in a dry room and at the same time be careful not to dry out. Decoys are also made today from stabilized wood, which has properties similar to acrylic. Polycarbonate or plastic decoys do not like high temperatures, sound good and are affordable in price, they are suitable for both beginners and true connoisseurs of hunting.

Selection rules

When choosing semolina, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules:

  1. In large spaces it is better to use ringing decoys. In small areas the sound should not be too loud.
  2. The best material for making a ringing decoy is acrylic. For small spaces, wooden decoys are used.
  3. Russian-made decoys have the same operating principle as foreign devices. However, the cost of domestic devices is often lower.
  4. Each breed of bird, be it the bean goose, gray or white-fronted goose, has its own type of sound signals. However, even the “wrong” decoy signal can work if wild geese show curiosity, which often happens.
  5. The easiest way to develop skills in working with decoys is on single-petal models. At the same time, multi-petal decoys are more suitable for hunting, as they convey the overtones of a goose call better.

The most famous models of decoys presented on the Russian market:

  1. Haydel's. A well-known American brand offers comfortable decoys, marked by the number of petals. Almost all models of this company are made of carbon fiber. It is for this reason that Haydel's decoys, although they look impressive, do not produce a very authentic sound.
  2. Goes Hunting Calls. The company offers high-quality decoys of the Trainwreck and Sidekick models. All decoys are made on the basis of threaded connections.
  3. Echo Calls. A well-known brand, popular among professional hunters. The decoys from this company are distinguished by their stylish appearance and excellent sound capabilities.
  4. Team Ground. The products of this manufacturer are equipped with three-stage sound control, which makes it easy to control the volume of the signal.
  5. Field Proven Calls. Decoys at affordable prices and with a lifetime guarantee. They have short bells, which is convenient for novice users.

Types and designs of duck decoys

Decoys are used in different hunting seasons, on large and small bodies of water. At the same time, different types of decoys are used for luring - loud, quiet or universal. The sound volume and timbre of the sound depends on the design, material of manufacture, settings and abilities of the duck song performer.

It may seem strange to the uninitiated, but for fans of decoy hunting it is quite natural that hunters organize real tournaments, competing in the skill of onomatopoeia and in the art of making devices for these purposes.

Grevillea plant Care at home and in open ground Growing from seeds and cuttings

There are wind decoys, when the sound is produced by blowing air, and electronic ones, which are essentially a recording of real bird calls. Electronic decoys are prohibited for hunting . It may be useful for a photographer who wants to arrange an unusual photo shoot for birds or as a training aid when teaching voice imitations.

Wind instruments are approved for use in hunting and have many design options and designs. The best are recognized as models that do not require voice support to sound, but only the flow of blown air is enough. The main structural difference is the structure of the membrane. It is made from one or two petals and different materials.

Why do you need a spirit bait? Is it possible to hunt without it?

Of course, when hunting wild ducks and geese, a decoy is, in most cases, simply necessary. This instrument has been used since ancient times, when people realized that imitating bird sounds makes it much easier to catch feathered prey. Hunting without a decoy will be less effective. It is not a fact that many hours of hiking along hunting trails will be crowned with success in the absence of any sound lures; the bird simply will not pay any attention to you

The special sounds made by a quack whistle will help you attract the attention of birds and lure them to your ambush site, from where you can take a kill shot

Using decoys requires training

Using a spirit bait has some nuances:

  • Do not blow into the device all the time. By arranging a brass band concert out of a hunt, you will scare away all the game for kilometers ahead. First, “quack” several times, then wait, “quack” again;
  • using bait requires practice. As funny as it may be, you also need to learn how to quack. The training will be long and possibly unsuccessful at first. But improvement is the path to perfection, so the more you practice, the better you will be able to lure prey;
  • You need to hunt with a decoy early in the morning or in the evening. It has already been said that the best time for duck hunting is these time periods. But remember that as soon as the field of visibility is significantly reduced, you need to start winding down the process until the next time;
  • in autumn and summer, you need to lure game in those areas where there is the most vegetation. But in the spring, any area where ducks are expected to be found is suitable;
  • Proper camouflage is important. Agree that a man standing in the middle of the forest blowing a quack whistle is unlikely to make ducks want to fly closer to him. So choose hunting clothes in neutral shades that are similar to the environment. You can make a stealth;
  • The beginning of September is the most ineffective time for hunting with blow bait. During this period, the chances of shooting a bird are the lowest, even if you have met all the necessary conditions.

Wooden decoy

Making semolina is quite a fascinating process. A true master always has material at hand and can spend hours without leaving the workshop, creating real masterpieces.

Not just any wood is suitable for decoy, but maple, oak or birch would be ideal. Their structure is dense, but can be processed well. Experienced craftsmen prefer more valuable wood: walnut, ebony, rosewood.

The decoy consists of the following parts:

  • The largest part is the mouthpiece.
  • Horn. It fits into the mouthpiece.
  • The horn has a tone board on which the reed is secured with a wedge.

For the mouthpiece, ¼ of a log with a diameter of about 20 cm is suitable. You will need to drill a hole in it for the horn. That is, quite large: the tone board will be located directly in the mouthpiece. (photo No. 1, No. 2).

What is a decoy for and is it possible to do without it?

Hunting ducks with decoys has many advantages. This device has long been appreciated by many hunters who always take it to lure wild birds. These devices can be industrially manufactured or homemade. There are also electronic or wind devices. Each of these types is designed to imitate the voice of ducks. This lures the birds to the right place where the hunter is hiding.

When using this device, you need to take into account the following features:

Hunter with decoy

  • don't use it all the time. This may scare away the ducks. You need to make several loud sounds and then wait a while;
  • When using a wind decoy, you need to practice for a long time to get good sound quality. Only in this case can you attract many ducks and drakes;
  • hunt using decoys early in the morning or late in the evening;
  • In autumn and summer, attract birds to areas that are rich in vegetation. In the spring, any area where ducks are likely to fly will do;
  • Even if you use a high-quality device, you will not be able to attract ducks without proper camouflage. It is necessary to dress in a suit of neutral shades and create a concealment;
  • At the beginning of September, the efficiency of hunting with decoy is the lowest.

Hunter's best friend

Using a decoy assumes that you already know how to play it, so practice at home or you won't be able to hunt. Hold the decoy with only one hand, imagine that it is a bottle from which you are drinking. Store your tool in a dry place, avoid prolonged contact with water. When hunting, “quack” the decoy a little, wait for the first duck to appear, then the whole flock, and shoot.

General provisions

This device is used at different times of the year, during hunting in both large and small bodies of water. Today there are three groups into which all structures are divided. The decoy can be quiet, loud or universal. How to make a decoy quiet or loud? The fact is that the timbre and volume of this device depend on the material from which it is made, on the design, and settings. It may seem strange to people unfamiliar with this business, but for fans of this business it has become a real competition to see who can better imitate the sounds of birds and who has the best decoy. How to make a decoy so that it is as effective as possible?

Here it is worth paying attention to the fact that the design can be wind, when the sound is produced by blowing air, or it can be electronic, which, in fact, simply reproduces the real sounds of a particular bird.

Let them decide for themselves

Observe how ducks respond to different vocal techniques and adapt to them. Simply put, let the birds tell you what they want to hear today.

Too often, attracting ducks becomes a chore for us. It includes a joyful call (hail) and return as the duck circles, single quacks and clicks as the bird lands on the water, and a continuous feeding sound as the decoy duck approaches. In most cases this will work, but not always. Give the bird what it wants.

For example, if a joyful call attracts a flock or a return cry causes a flying bird to return, stick to these techniques. If not, try making sounds a little lower and focus on single quacks or periodic feeding sounds.

It happens that the bird behaves relatively calmly and there is no need to lure it. Do not straighten the cat's tail in such cases. As experienced people say: if the bird comes to you on its own, don’t screw up the decoy.

Homemade wood version

How to make a decoy? Naturally, it is best to start with the simplest and most common material - wood. Different types of wood will produce different timbres of sound, and therefore it is possible to experiment to find the most suitable one for your purposes. As practice shows, experienced hunters make and carry with them not just one whistle, but a whole set. The advantage is the ability to quickly change a faulty or dirty device to another.

The simplest drawing of a duck decoy involves the use of birch as the main material.

Number of reeds

A duck decoy can have from one to three reeds. The sound quality of the decoy and the ease of use depend on the number of reeds.

  • Single-tongued decoys are superior in sound quality to all other decoys; the sound of such decoys is the most realistic, sonorous and rich. They practically do not stick due to humidity. Difficult to master for novice hunters, the slightest error in sound extraction becomes immediately noticeable.
  • Double-tongued decoys - recommended for use by novice hunters. Double-tongued decoys forgive many of the mistakes of a novice caller; mistakes do not affect the sound quality. The disadvantage of a two-tongue decoy is that it sticks much more often and more strongly than a single-tongue one. Sticking of the semolina occurs due to the ingress of moisture from the breath of the decoy operator into the decoy. The sticking of the decoy is greatly influenced by the design of the decoy and weather conditions during hunting.
  • Three-tongue decoys are found and used much less frequently than single- and two-tongue decoys. The sound quality corresponds to a two-tongued decoy. Sticks as well as a two-tongue one or even a little more. Not recommended for purchase by novice hunters.

How to make a decoy with your own hands?

The operation of many devices becomes clearer if you make them yourself. You can also attract a duck with a decoy you make yourself, the sound of which is the most original. To work you will need a dry birch cutting. You need to use a drill or a lathe to make a longitudinal hole in the center. Next, use a jigsaw to cut the stalk lengthwise. It is convenient to do this by holding a special mandrel in a vice - a block with a diameter of 1.6 cm, into which you need to insert the handle. After cutting, process the halves by tapering the end to create a one-sided wedge.

Now fold both pieces together to create a double-sided wedge. If this is difficult, then first connect the blanks with tape, and then insert them together into the mandrel and at the same time remove the top layer under the cone. Next, the surface of the wedge needs to be treated with alcohol stain, allowed to dry and coated with nitro varnish. You can also make the membrane yourself. A piece of the thinnest tin from a tin can is suitable for it. Please note that the size of the membrane must exactly match the size of the resonator. You need to insert the membrane between the blanks and fasten it with cambric. Now tune the decoy close to the sound of the bird’s voice by moving the membrane and cambric along the resonator. If the inside diameter is large, then you will get a low sound and vice versa. There is nothing overly complicated about making a decoy with your own hands. We wish you good luck in the hunt!

Varieties of decoys depending on the operating principle of the mouthpieces

There are four types of whistles:

  • single-tongued;
  • one and a half reed;
  • bilingual;
  • trilingual.

Single-reed whistles are difficult for novice hunters, but they are the most practical and reliable in sound. You can try with two-tongue ones. The latter variety is used less frequently.

If you don’t plan to make a decoy with your own hands, then it is preferable to buy more expensive imported options, especially if you are a beginner.

Duck decoy volume

Duck decoys differ in the volume of sound they produce. You need to select a decoy based on sound volume depending on the size of the body of water where you are hunting and the weather conditions that develop during the hunt. The larger the body of water and the worse the weather, the louder the duck call should be, and vice versa.

Depending on the volume of sound, decoys are:

  • Loud decoys - used in windy weather and on large bodies of water, used to lure ducks from a long distance.
  • Decoys with medium volume are the most versatile among duck decoys, suitable for hunting in both high and low water, in both calm and windy weather.
  • Quiet decoys - designed for luring ducks in small bodies of water, at close range. Used in calm, windless weather.

It is impossible to say for sure what loudness decoy is the best in relation to other decoys. Experienced hunters have in their arsenal different models of decoys, from different manufacturers, with different degrees of volume and use each of them in hunting conditions suitable for this decoy. We advise beginner hunters to purchase a decoy with a medium volume level.

Sound volume

Many hunters are interested in how to attract a duck with a wind decoy in the spring. Before you go duck hunting with a decoy, there are a few more details you need to know.

For example, no less important is information about what the sound of a decoy should be.

So, a few recommendations:

  • If the hunt is planned on a large body of open water, with a strong wind blowing, then the sound made by the decoy must be strong and loud enough.
  • And if the hunt is carried out without any shelter and the hunter needs to lure a duck from close range, then the sound that the decoy makes should be quite soft and very elegant. In this case, volume is not important.

Wood decoy

The methods using cartridges are over, this time we will use wood. To make a duck decoy from wood with your own hands, we will need:

  1. Well-dried wood from oak, birch or maple.
  2. A small piece of tin no more than 0.3 mm thick. For example, you can take the lid of a used tin can.
  3. Cambric (insulator made of PVC or similar materials).
  4. Alcohol stain and colorless nitro varnish. Finally, they can be used to cover the surface of the semolina, which will give it durability, moisture resistance and better sound.

Once all the materials described above have been prepared, you can begin the manufacturing process itself . Detailed step-by-step instructions will help with this:

  • Using a lathe we turn out the part: length - 90 mm, diameter of the first end - 30 mm, diameter of the second end - 20 mm. If it is not possible to use a lathe, you can make the part using a knife and chisel. The main thing is to do everything carefully, avoiding any defects, even the smallest ones.
  • Saw the finished part lengthwise so that you get two separate elements.
  • Sand the edges of these two parts with regular sandpaper.
  • Make a recess in the middle of the parts so that the wall thickness is no more than half a centimeter.
  • Cut off the ends of the halves that are narrower than the others a little diagonally. You need to make sure that after connecting these parts you get a double-sided wedge.
  • It's time to use other materials that we prepared at the beginning of the method. First of all, coat the parts with varnish and stain, and wait until completely dry. In principle, you can skip this step, but then the decoy will turn out a little worse.
  • Cut the membrane out of tin. The width of this membrane should be exactly the same as the diameter of the resonator. Insert it between the halves and secure with strong thread.

The decoy is ready. Now, as in the previous methods, it is necessary to achieve the best sound of the device. The sound is regulated using a membrane inside the decoy.

Decoy made of wood

Details of a homemade wooden decoy
To make a decoy, it is best to take well-dried wood from birch, oak or maple. It is also necessary to first prepare a small piece of tin with a thickness of no more than 0.3 mm. It can be taken from a used tin can. You will also need a cambric. This is an insulator that is made of PVC or other materials.

Wooden decoy manufacturing technology:

Scheme of a homemade wooden decoy

  1. Using a lathe, you need to turn a part of a certain shape and size. The length of the workpiece should be 90 mm, the diameter at one end 30 mm, and at the other 20 mm. If you do not have the opportunity to work on a lathe, do everything necessary with a regular sharp knife and chisel. It is important to achieve a smooth surface without any defects.
  2. Saw the finished piece lengthwise to create two separate elements. To facilitate this process, attach a wooden piece to a metal rod and secure it in a vice.

Decoy for a mallard drake, disassembled

  1. Sand the edges of the resulting parts with sandpaper.
  2. In the middle of each element it is necessary to make a recess so that the wall thickness is approximately 5 mm.
  3. The narrow ends of the two halves must be cut off at an angle. It is necessary to ensure that after connecting the parts you get a double-sided wedge.
  4. Coat the finished parts with stain and varnish, then wait until completely dry.
  5. Cut out a membrane from tin, the width of which should be the same as the diameter of the resonator.
  6. Insert it between the halves and secure with insulating material.
  7. Secure the decoy with a strong thread.

Achieve sound quality by adjusting the position of the membrane inside the decoy.

Wind device for duck hunting

This duck decoy is made using a pair of brass sleeves. Select tubes with capsules with a caliber of 28 mm and 32 mm and a length of 0.7 cm. Prepare a sharp knife, a small piece of wood, and a 3-sided file. Algorithm for working according to the drawing:

  1. Shorten one of the sleeves by 1 cm from the cut.
  2. Make a hole with a file in an area 10 mm from the edge of each tube. Its height is 5 mm, length is 10 mm.
  3. Cut two round plugs from hard wood along the cross-section of the holes. The length of each is about 1 cm. Wood can be replaced with soft plastic such as fluoroplastic.
  4. File both plugs. When inserted into the tube opposite the cut, there should be a gap of about 3 mm in the wall.

You will get two whistles, like children's ones, made of willow. Place both sleeves side to side at the same level as the cuts. Solder together. Solder the metal ring from the keys to the bottom of the structure. This makes it more convenient to wear the decoy on your belt. Operating the device is easy:

  • press both holes tightly to your lips and blow - you will get a double sound;
  • Lightly moving the cork along the sleeve will change the tonality of the sound.

Attention! Practice shows that flocks flying at a distance of 150-200 m from the hunter respond to the sound of such a decoy.

Getting the job done

The tube of this item will be the body of the future decoy. In it, stepping back 2 cm from the edge, you need to cut a small section in two movements. The first movement is to equip a vertical and straight cut closer to the edge. The second cut is inclined, and it should be in the same place.

How to make a decoy for black grouse from the same syringe? To finish the job, you need to use the piston to set the threshold to the desired position. The correct position is that the end of the sill rests or protrudes slightly beyond the vertical line of the hole made earlier. In this case, the bevel of the flat should be directed towards the outlet.

The final manufacturing steps are as follows. The syringe rod is extended, the appropriate sound is adjusted, after which the excess part is cut off so that it is possible to close the decoy with a lid.

conclusions

In the end, it is worth saying that the variety of decoys allows them to be made from a variety of materials. More experienced hunters, who already have experience in this matter, ask questions such as how to make a decoy for wapiti from film, for example. However, this is quite complicated, and therefore it is worth starting with simpler and more understandable examples. You should move on to complex structures only after assembling a sufficient number of simple specimens. In general, this design will greatly facilitate the task of hunting different types of birds.

Beech leaf

If the hunter is a beginner, then it is best for him to use a beech leaf to imitate the sound of a roe deer. Such a leaf is necessary to lure the female.

Here's how to make a roe deer decoy with your own hands:

  • First of all, it is recommended to take a beech leaf and cut it on one side.
  • Then you need to bend the edge of the sheet inward, about one quarter. This should be done along the long side of the sheet.
  • In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the decoy does not burst at the bend.

As for the leaf, you need to take it in a special way, that is, spread your index and middle fingers slightly apart, then apply it to your lower lip so that its lower part lies on the lip. And the upper lip is placed on top.
