Simple and effective ways to get rid of a wasp nest

Buzzing striped insects are the usual companions of humans in the city and at their summer cottage. But it’s one thing they’re just flying nearby, and another thing is they’ve built a nest on the balcony or under the roof. Such close proximity causes a lot of trouble, ranging from a constant hum to the threat of bites. If small children or allergy sufferers live in the house, then insects must be eliminated as soon as possible. How to get rid of a wasp's nest? There are various methods of control that make it possible to cope with stinging insects in a guaranteed and short period of time. To make the right choice, you should study their features and evaluate their effectiveness.

Where to look for a nest?

In Russia, paper wasps are more common than other species. They are hard-working social insects that live in families led by one or more queens. Their color is black and yellow stripes. Paper wasps build nests in the form of open hexagonal honeycombs. They use carefully chewed tree bark and rotten stumps as material.

Less often, home owners encounter hornets. This is one of the families of large wasps; the size of the insects is 25-35 mm. Hornets differ not only in size, but also in color. The head, chest and belly stripes may be reddish-brown. The body is densely covered with hairs. Insects live in colonies with one queen. They build large multi-tiered nests with a protective shell. It will not be difficult to notice such a structure.

Before you start eliminating wasp nests, you need to know where to look for them. The queen chooses a quiet, protected place. When inspecting the territory, first of all they look at uninhabited areas:

  • attics of buildings;
  • rarely visited outbuildings;
  • space under the roof;
  • cracks in the wall;
  • canopies for balconies, verandas and loggias;
  • voids and holes in the ground;
  • tree hollows and branches;
  • abandoned building materials - boards, slate, cinder blocks, etc.

Attention. The wasp's nest is dark or light gray in color. It can be in the shape of a ball, a cone or an umbrella made of honeycombs.

If a dwelling is built behind wall paneling or in cracks, it may be difficult to detect. In this case, it is necessary to monitor the insects. You should put meat bait. They feed their offspring with protein food, which means I will take pieces of bait directly to the nest.

Attention. A wasp house cannot be knocked down with a stick or other object. Enraged predators will attack in a swarm and inflict many painful bites.

How to find insect habitats?

Getting rid of a wasp nest is quite difficult. First you need to determine where they live. Insects, as a rule, prefer hard-to-reach and protected places.

If you cannot find the nest right away, you will have to use the bait method. The process is organized as follows:

  1. Place pieces of meat in an open place outside.
  2. Wait for the wasps to fly.
  3. Watch where the wasps fly after they eat.

After finding the place of residence of the wasps, you can proceed to choosing a method of influence.

The choice of approach should take into account 2 main factors:

  • the size of the insect's home - small or large;
  • location.

What to do if wasps have settled on the balcony?

There can be no question of a peaceful neighborhood with insects that have built a nest on a balcony or loggia. The territory is too small, so the residents will nest nearby. And the wasps will not like this. Predators will regularly sting people, seeing them as a potential threat. The choice in this situation is small: do not open the balcony door until late autumn or destroy the invaders.

The first thing you have to do is determine the location of the wasp's nest on the balcony. It can be located:

  • under the ceiling;
  • on the wall;
  • behind the casing;
  • from the outside.

In each case, you will have to act, taking into account the nuances of housing placement.

Traps

A universal option is to make a trap with poisoned bait. You will need an empty tin can or a cut plastic bottle. Bait made from kvass, compote or beer is poured into the container. The insecticide is first diluted in the liquid. These agents have a wide spectrum of action. They affect insects by contact and intestinal means. Substances in the form of a concentrate or powder are easily dissolved in liquid.

Advice. Choose an odorless product, otherwise the bait will not attract wasps.

One of the inexpensive and effective insecticides is boric acid. The powder is odorless, being a medicine, it is safe for humans. For 100 ml of sweet bait you will need half a teaspoon of boric acid. To prevent the wasps from drowning in the trap, but carrying poison to the nest, you will need to install ladders made of sticks. The mechanism of destruction is simple: adult individuals die after eating the poison, and the larvae and the uterus receive the toxin through contact. The only drawback of the method is that you have to wait 7-10 days for the insects to die.

Chemical insecticides

In a multi-story building, some methods, such as burning the nest, are not available. But there are modern effective drugs that can be used without fear. The most convenient form of release is wasp nest aerosol. Thanks to the powerful jet, treatment can be carried out at a distance from the insects’ home. The drug is able to penetrate into hard-to-reach places - behind the casing, in cracks or behind the baseboard. With its help it is easy to process a nest built on the outside of the balcony.

Among the popular brands:

  • Aerosol Dr. Klausa - active substances cypermethrin, tetramethrin and piperonyl butoxide. The combination of insecticides makes the product highly toxic to flying insects. It penetrates the chitinous cover and blocks the nerve impulses of the wasps. Adults die within a few minutes from paralysis of all organs. Processing takes place with windows and doors closed. The room is ventilated after 15 minutes.
  • Dichlorvos is a product proven over decades of use. Since Soviet times, the formula of the active substance has changed. Modern products use pyrethroid compounds. One cylinder is enough to exterminate stinging insects on the balcony. The advantage of dichlorvos is its affordable price.
  • Mosquitol aerosol against wasp nests - a drug designed specifically for the destruction of flying insects in non-residential premises and on the street. A powerful tool that allows you to deal with the nest in a few minutes. The active ingredients - bioallethrin and cypermethrin - belong to the second generation pyrethroids. The two-component formulation is designed specifically to combat stinging insects - wasps and hornets. High pressure allows you to spray the can from a distance of 6 m.

Spraying a self-prepared solution of insecticides will be no less effective. Preparations based on microcapsules - Delta Zone, Minap 22, Get, ensure the effectiveness of the composition in any conditions. The prepared solution is poured into a container and sprayed as a spray.

Mechanical method

A nest built on the ceiling of a balcony can be destroyed without chemicals. All you need is a bucket filled with water. At night, when the whole family gathers in the house, the nest is immersed in water. To secure the bucket pressed to the ceiling, you will need a stepladder. The structure should stand for several hours. This time is enough for the insects to drown. Before you remove the bucket, it is better to be on the safe side. You can check for live wasps by hitting the dish with a stick. If there is no humming or buzzing, all the insects are dead.

How to remove wasps from inside walls and floors

Wasps make their nests not only in the ground and in the attic; sometimes insects climb into the cracks of the walls of the house and under the floor. It is quite difficult to smoke wasps out of these hard-to-reach places. Try the method below.

Take a rubber or plastic tube. Attach one end of it to a container filled with an insecticide (for example, Dichlorvos), and insert the other into a hole in the wall or floor. At the same time, tightly close the remaining entrances and exits that wasps can use (it is better to cover them with polyurethane foam or plaster them). Inject the poison from the balloon into the only open hole and, leaving the tube in it, wait 10-15 minutes until the insects die. Then seal this hole to prevent new wasps from getting in.

Do not forget about protection, because insects can fly out of holes in the wall or floor that you did not notice and sting. Also note: there should be no people or pets in the room.

If wasps enter your home through a vent, cover the opening with a mosquito net soaked in a chemical insecticide or vinegar solution.

Another extremely original method was discovered by us on the Internet. In the video, a man who couldn't get to a wasp's nest in his attic used a vacuum cleaner with a long tube attachment. He brought the end of the pipe to a hole in the roof through which the wasps flew out of the house, thus, everyone who tried to leave the wasp's nest was immediately sucked in by the vacuum cleaner. The process turned out to be lengthy and quite dangerous, so the vacuum cleaner hose with nozzle had to be secured to a holder. This method has a number of disadvantages. Firstly, the wasps in the vacuum cleaner bag are the most alive, and you will have to think about how to dispose of them. Secondly, this way you will not destroy the larvae. Thirdly, there is a chance that you will anger the swarm. Therefore, we still insist that it is best to use the services of a specialist.

Precautionary measures

It is necessary to begin the fight against stinging insects after taking safety measures. They provide:

  1. Wear protective suit. This can be any clothing made of thick fabric with long sleeves. The head is covered with a hat or hood; the best option is to throw a mosquito net. Gloves are put on your hands; the cuffs of the sleeves should fit snugly to your hands so that wasps cannot get under your clothes.
  2. Act in the evening, when insects are minimally active.
  3. The use of any perfume is prohibited.

Stinging insects are an unpleasant neighborhood in the countryside

Living outside the city requires close proximity to nature. Wasps are traditional inhabitants of summer cottages. They are our allies in the fight against garden pests. Each predator catches and gives 20-30 small insects to feed its offspring. Unfortunately, wasps not only help, but also cause harm.

  • Insects spoil the harvest, especially berries - raspberries, grapes.
  • Aggressive predators threaten the health of children and the elderly.
  • Wasps often become carriers of intestinal infections. They feed on garbage dumps and animal corpses, and then settle on food.

Arriving at the site in the summer, the owners may see an unpleasant surprise in the form of a structure above the entrance to the house or under the roof of an outdoor toilet. It’s not worth taking risks in such a situation; you need to quickly decide how to get rid of the wasp’s nest in the country. Chemicals will be an indispensable means for quick and guaranteed destruction. You can use one of the described aerosols. This option has several advantages:

  • The products are intended for use indoors and outdoors.
  • They are highly toxic to flying insects.
  • Can be used against nests located at a height of up to 3-5 m.

Attention. For safety reasons, it is not recommended to spray chemicals from stairs. If an insect attacks you unexpectedly, you may fall and get injured.

After destroying the inhabitants, the paper honeycombs must be knocked down with any tool and burned along with the corpses of the wasps.

A less safe, but equally effective method is to use a bag of insecticide. You will need a large, thick plastic bag, tape and one of the insect repellent concentrates. Any chemical is poured inside the bag:

  • Executioner;
  • Cucaracha;
  • Karbofos;
  • Sinuzan;
  • Get.

Polyethylene is put on the nest, its neck is secured with tape. Everything must fit tightly so that the inhabitants of the house do not break free. It is recommended to leave the package for several hours. After this, as in the case of the bucket, it is worth checking the effectiveness of the work. By knocking on the nest, you can verify the death of the wasps. At the point of attachment, the structure is knocked down and disposed of together with the bag.

Attention. This method is dangerous, it requires courage and skill. Protective equipment will be required. People who are allergic to wasp stings should not destroy them.

Team of professionals

Fighting wasps under the roof of a house is an unequal battle. In this case, it would be better to arrange for specialists to visit your home . In this case, practically nothing is required from the owners - professionals take on all the dangerous work, and besides, they have everything necessary for this: protective clothing and special equipment.

The cost of the service varies from 1000 to 3000 rubles. from a summer cottage.

In addition, such companies provide a guarantee for the work performed that insects will not appear in this place for a year.

Disinfectors , who are called to your home to exterminate rats, moles, and synanthropic insects, will help you fight wild wasps. These companies exist in almost every locality. However, this work can also be carried out by the sanitary and epidemiological station or firefighters. By calling one of these services, you should not expect a quick departure, since this is not their direct responsibility, and therefore, they provide such services only by agreement.

Ways to combat wasp colonies

The nest is not always located in a visible place. More often you have to look for it throughout the area. Depending on where it is found, a remedy against wasp nests is selected. A common option is to build a dwelling in the ground. A practical way to get rid of paper honeycombs is to burn them. About a liter of flammable liquid (gasoline or kerosene) is poured into the hole where striped predators live, then set on fire. To avoid getting burned, you should make a small path of gasoline along which the fire will reach the nest.

Burning is one of the most effective methods, but it is not always possible to implement it. In some cases, there is a risk of trees or nearby buildings catching fire. An alternative to fire will be water. The dwelling of earth wasps is filled with two buckets of boiling water. A building found in a hollow cannot be burned or flooded. Insecticides will come to the rescue again. The concentrate is dissolved in water and poured into the hollow. The entrance is tightly plugged with a cloth impregnated with the same composition.

The structure of winged architects can be located on a tree branch. In this situation, there is no better way than to smoke out the hornet's nest. A fire with damp branches is built under it. It is necessary to place it so that the smoke goes to the honeycomb. Wasps do not like the smell of smoke; after a few hours, all adults will fly away. At this time, the structure can be knocked down. There will be larvae and pupae inside, which should be burned.

Preventing wasp nests

To avoid fighting stinging insects, you should pay attention to several recommendations:

  • In the spring, inspect the balcony and other places where a wasp may settle. At this time, their house consists of several hundred and one queen. By the end of summer, the colony grows to hundreds of aggressive individuals.
  • Unnecessary items and building materials should be removed. These are potential nest sites.
  • Seal cracks in walls and holes between sheathing in a timely manner.
  • Do not dump food scraps near your dacha; carefully close the trash cans. Collect fruits falling to the ground in time. These measures will deprive insects of access to food.

Poisoned baits

You can also use poisoned baits to exterminate wasps; when using them, you will have to wait longer for the results, but this option is the safest in all aspects, and also does not require any skill for successful implementation.

To poison insects, you must adhere to the following instructions:

  1. As bait, it is best to use beer, to which additional sugar is added, or fermented jam , which has an aroma attractive to wasps. It is not recommended to use honey, since bees that do not pose a threat to humans will also react to it.
  2. Add any toxic substance to the bait ; it can be one of the types of insecticides or just boric acid.
  3. The bait and the poisonous substance must be mixed well with each other, then placed on a plate and placed on an accessible and open surface. It is best to choose a place somewhere in the trees or where children or pets cannot reach the poisoned bait.
  4. Renew the poisoned bait every few days ; this must be repeated until the insects finally disappear from the area where they were planned to be hatched.
