What animals have sex for pleasure?

The word “sex” translated from English simply means gender (in the sense of male or female), but in our vocabulary it has acquired the meaning of an action that a man and a woman (not always in this combination) perform for reproductive purposes or to simply achieve pleasure. In some sources it is replaced by the concept of “marital duty,” but in our liberated days... And the word “debt” itself somehow does not fit with this process, which is sometimes “engaged” by completely unmarried people. But what about animals, our smaller brothers? Do they enjoy sex, do they strive for it and can they get it?

Bonobos

Bonobos are pygmy chimpanzees, perhaps the most loving of all primates. Sex is everything in their lives: they do it when they want to get to know each other and when they want to make peace after a quarrel. Moreover, the imagination of bonobos is limitless; it seems that these monkeys love to study the Kama Sutra in their spare time. The number of sexual positions is large, in addition, bonobos love to engage in oral and anal sex, as well as kissing. Bonobos constantly change partners and do not consider it necessary to be alone during sexual intercourse.

And if some joyful event happens in their pack, for example, they find a lot of food, it ends in a general sexual orgy. Male bonobos love to show off their penises. Sometimes they arrange sparring matches, during which they fight with their penises like rapiers. And after a quarrel, the males, wanting to make peace, turn their butts towards each other, bend over and begin to rub their hands together. Masturbation and homosexuality are also common among bonobos. The only thing bonobos don't have is a sexual relationship between mother and son.

Social component

Unfortunately, it is impossible to ask a female macaque a question about her feelings, but it is reasonable to conclude that this behavior is characteristic of (ordinary, human) women, at least in some aspects. This conclusion is objectively justified by the fact that sexual intercourse in macaques is sometimes accompanied by physical changes observed in humans (for example, such as increased heart rate and vaginal spasms). Interestingly, female monkeys tend to experience more acute reactions in cases where the male occupies a higher place in the breeding hierarchy of dominance. Scientists suggest that in addition to the physiological component, there is also a social component in the intimate life of primates. In general, like people.

Dolphins

Dolphin love
It has been proven that dolphins enjoy sexual intercourse and mate not only during the breeding season to produce offspring, but also for pleasure.

First, the male courts the female he likes, bringing her bouquets of algae or gifts (shells, corals or sponges).

When the female reciprocates his feelings, a stage of more active seduction begins: lovers play in the water, jump, caress and touch each other, and only a few hours later sexual intercourse occurs.

One dolphin can make love several times a day.

There are rumors that some dolphins are real libertines who are ready to enter into “relations” not only with their own kind, but also with other animals (for example, turtles) or even with humans. Although there is no reliable evidence of this.

Pleasure and satisfaction

In a broad sense, pleasure is the satisfaction of some need, hence the common root of these two words. Instincts dictate to all living beings their needs for food, drink, sleep and much more, without which it is impossible. Reproduction is also a need embedded in the brains of all animals, insects, reptiles, fish, amphibians and, of course, people. Without this “bait”, increasing or maintaining the population would simply be impossible. Just as pollen attracts pollinating bees with its aroma, the desire to obtain sexual satisfaction pushes many to various, sometimes very dubious, adventures. There are often cases when people pay for sex with money, but most often it means the highest manifestation of tender mutual feelings and is called love. So how are things with the animals?

Ladybug

Ladybug
Ladybugs are the most loving insects on our planet. Their mating lasts several hours, and they do this every day. Of course, we are not talking about any kind of love and lust. The reason for such prolonged sexual intercourse is as follows: the male thus marks the territory. While he sits on the female, other males cannot encroach on her. The male either sits motionless, or begins his sexual dance, rhythmically swaying on the female’s back. At this time, the “lady of the heart” continues to look for food for herself, not paying any attention to her boyfriend.

Puberty of males

As dogs grow up, they go through a difficult period of puberty. The beginning of this process in young male dogs is indicated by an active attraction to female dogs, which can appear at the age of 5–12 months. Physiologically, this is due to the fact that the male begins to synthesize testosterone and other sex hormones, and the first sperm begin to form in the sperm in minimal quantities. They are characterized by low activity, therefore, in the early stages of puberty, the male is not capable of fertilization. Depending on the conditions of detention and the state of health of the animal, the reproductive system is finally formed by 12–18 months. Additionally, the timing of puberty is also related to the size of the animal. In representatives of large and giant breeds, it occurs at 15–24 months of age.

Octopuses

Octopus
The male octopus first cares for his chosen one, strokes her with his tentacles, and only then fertilizes her. Moreover, mating lasts a very long time; the excited male will “stick” to the female until she throws him off herself. Moreover, males can “molest” not only representatives of the fairer sex, but also other males. There is one species of octopus whose mating can be called extreme - these are the argonaut octopuses. Male Argonauts have a special tentacle (hectocotyl), which, before mating, comes off the male’s body and itself penetrates the female’s body. Sometimes several hectocotyls were found in one female. There is no need to feel sorry for the males; over time, they grow new tentacles.

Macaque Orgasm

Of course, after all of the above, it is quite logical to conclude that animals (at least mammals) still experience pleasure. However, the question arises about its depth and similarity of sensations to what people call an orgasm. This is especially interesting in relation to females, since, firstly, everything is simpler with males, and secondly, their role in mating and its productivity can hardly be overestimated. Italian researchers Alfonso Troisi and Monica Carosi spent hundreds of hours observing macaques and witnessed approximately 240 individual copulations between females and males of the species. In every third of these matings, they noted instances of what they called female reciprocal orgasm: “the female turns her head to look back at her partner, turns around and captures the male.”

Slugs

Slugs
are hermaphrodites, each individual has both female and male sexual characteristics, although, of course, every slug wants to play the role of a male. When two partners meet, first a fight breaks out, during which the winner bites off the opponent’s penis, thereby determining who will be the male and who the female. In fact, slugs can safely be called sexual giants, since they have the longest penises (in relation to body length). For example, a banana slug, with a body length of 15 cm, has a penis length of 80 cm.

Slutty monkeys

Bonobos, also called “hippie monkeys,” are known for their penchant for same-sex relationships and “relationships” between adults and “teens.” Another pleasure-loving primate, the pale capuchin even surpasses him in what humans would call debauchery. In the behavior of representatives of both species, primatologists have identified numerous episodes when females allowed males to approach them during non-reproductive periods. In other words, they had a lot of sex even when pregnancy was not possible—for example, when they were already pregnant or while nursing immediately after birth. Additionally, interactions between mature and immature individuals of both species occurred equally frequently.

Deep sea anglerfish

Anglerfish
Male deep-sea anglerfish can be considered masochists because they sacrifice themselves for the sake of mating. Males are much smaller than females, so one female can have several “suitors” who sink their teeth into her large body, causing her deep wounds. Gradually, they merge with the female’s body, they begin to share a common circulatory system, and the males themselves lose their eyes, fins and other organs. They become a kind of sperm bank for the female, who periodically uses it to fertilize eggs. It turns out that male anglerfish doom themselves to lifelong mating.

How are dolphins different from other animals?

The dolphin differs from other animal species in that it has a lot of free time. While other animals spend most of their time getting food, the dolphin spends only half an hour a day on this activity. This is why a dolphin can afford to play, have fun and have sex for pleasure.

These smartest animals are very sociable, easily make contact with people, and taming them is not difficult. That is why they are actively involved in any underwater work; they are excellent helpers for people. History knows many examples when these animals saved drowning people and even entire ships going to reefs.

Bed bugs

Bugs
These insects mate not by consent, but by force. The so-called traumatic insemination occurs when the male pierces the female’s belly with his penis and injects seed into her (his penis is very sharp and curved). Males often miss, leaving the seed in other parts of the female’s body: in the head or in the paws. These sexual acts do not end with fertilization, which is why, obviously, the male does this very often (up to two hundred times a day). At the same time, the male releases a huge amount of seed so that at least a small part of it reaches the desired place of the female. If the bug were the size of a person, it would secrete three buckets of seed each time. It is clear that with such love, it is difficult to find so many different females in the area, so male bedbugs often “enter into contact” with male bedbugs or even with other insects. The female mates once during her life.

Need or desire?

Not all living beings are capable of experiencing pleasure. This feeling is difficult to attribute to beetles, spiders and snakes, but higher mammals are capable of it. You just need to pet the cat to feel it. In 2001, scientists found that laboratory rats love to be tickled and emit a kind of cheerful laughter, however, inaudible, outside the range of human hearing. If we know that animals (cats, dogs, monkeys, etc.) experience a general feeling of pleasure, does this apply to sex? Does the process of instinctive reproduction include an element of carnal pleasure? This can be found out by studying specimens with which mating cannot lead to procreation - for example, between pairs of males, females, or in cases where the individual has not reached sexual maturity. It is also possible to consider cases of sexual contacts that occur outside the breeding season.

Navy SEALs, what's wrong with you?

Fur seals are cute eared seals, harmless and slightly clumsy on land and lightning-fast and dangerous predators in the water. And if dolphins use dead fish for sexual satisfaction, then these beauties do not neglect interspecies sex with living animals.

Most often, fur seals feed on fish and krill (small crustaceans), but they can also attack penguins - and not at all for a snack. Fur seals have been repeatedly spotted in Antarctica attempting (sometimes successfully) to copulate with penguins.

The first time a fur seal was filmed trying to have sex with a king penguin was in 2006 on Marion Island in Antarctica, where both species live. Scientists, having studied what happened, decided that the cat either showed the aggressive behavior of a predator, or was trying to play and got carried away, as he was inexperienced in sex. Be careful, especially impressionable people should not watch!

But by 2014, similar cases were repeated several times - and were included in the study “Numerous cases of sexual abuse of king penguins by Kerguelen fur seals.” In three out of four cases, the seals released the penguins. However, one day a cat killed a penguin and ate it after intercourse.

Researchers have suggested that the seals learn from each other, and the act of one of them gave rise to a whole fashion for “violence against penguins.” Another reason for this behavior was the inexperience and unattractiveness of these males to females. The animals filmed were not yet large enough to have their own harem (yes, cats are polygamous).

Possible deviations

There are cases when one or both testes remain in the abdominal cavity for a long time or do not descend at all. Males with such abnormalities are called cryptorchid. Males with bilateral cryptorchidism are most often unable to leave offspring, while those with unilateral cryptorchidism are quite fertile. But cryptorchid males are not allowed for breeding. It is better to remove the testicle (or testicles) remaining in the abdominal cavity, as they are a potential risk of developing cancer. There are other, less obvious developmental pathologies. If the owner of a stud dog has any doubts about whether the pet's genitals are developing correctly, they should consult a doctor.

Scientists have found out whether animals will enjoy “intimacy”

We were sure that man is the only living creature on Earth who enjoys intimate relationships. It turns out that everything is not so simple.

Sex is nice. Although if you read the scientific literature, it is difficult to draw such a conclusion. Probably because most studies describing sexual behavior are based on the theory of evolution, ignoring mental and emotional experiences.

We would not be wrong if we said that we have sex to preserve our genetic heritage. However, such a definition does not take into account fleeting but very important aspects of a basic social need.

Science has long—and quite rightly—wondered whether animals experience something similar.

Scientific evidence in recent decades suggests that animals experience a general feeling of satisfaction. Anyone who has ever petted a cat knows this.

In 2001, psychologists Jeffrey Burgdorf and Jaak Panskepp discovered that laboratory rats enjoy being tickled. At such moments they made sounds reminiscent of contented laughter, which the human ear, however, is not able to recognize. Moreover, they actively sought this feeling.

But does this extend to carnal pleasures? One way to find out is to study examples of sexual relationships that cannot lead to the birth of offspring - for example, between two or more individuals who are all male or only female.

And also in couples where one (or more) partners have not reached puberty or where sexual contact occurs outside the breeding season.

For example, same-sex relationships and sex between mature and sub-adult bonobo chimpanzees.

But not only bonobos get pleasure from sex that does not lead to fertilization, but also, for example, white-faced capuchins.

Primatologists Joseph Manson, Susan Perry and Amy Parrish found that females of both species sexually harassed males regardless of whether they were fertile. In other words, they actively had sex even when pregnancy was not possible—for example, when they were already pregnant or nursing newborns immediately after giving birth.

Sexual contacts between sexually mature and immature individuals occurred as often as between two adult animals.

If animals have sex more often than necessary to conceive, this may also indicate pleasure motivation. During ovulation, a female lion can mate 100 times a day for about a week, with multiple partners each time.

To carry out the journey from conception to the birth of offspring, only one sperm is needed, but it seems that the lioness has nothing against multiple sexual acts. Cougars and leopards also mate frequently. So maybe they just like it?

Another important aspect of the question is whether animals experience orgasm. This is especially interesting in relation to females, because fertilization does not depend on their ability to experience orgasm.

Italian researchers Alfonso Troisi and Monica Carosi observed Japanese macaques for 238 hours and witnessed 240 copulations between males and females.

During a third of these matings, they observed what they called orgasmic reactions from the female.

Macaque behavior is also sometimes accompanied by physiological changes that are also observed in humans, such as increased heart rate and involuntary vaginal contractions.

Interestingly, female macaques most often showed this reaction when copulating with a male of a high hierarchical rank.

This suggests that there are not only physiological, but also social factors. That is, this is not only a reflexive reaction to sexual arousal.

Oral sex is also no stranger to the animal world. It is observed in primates, spotted hyenas and goats. Female cheetahs and lions lick and caress the males' genitals during mating rituals.

Oral sex is also common among short-nosed fruit bats. With its help, they are believed to increase the chances of fertilization.

An illustrative example is the behavior of two male brown bears in a nature reserve in Croatia. In a paper published in the journal Zoo Biology, the researchers said they followed them for more than six years and recorded 28 acts of oral sex between two males.

Researchers led by Agnieszka Sergiel from the Department of Wildlife Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences suggest that the reason for this behavior was that both bears were weaned from their mother while they were still in their feeding period.

Such acts continued for many years, even after the cubs grew up - perhaps because they still enjoyed it.

When explaining this animal behavior, researchers usually rely on evolutionary mechanisms.

As ethologist Jonathan Balcombe, who studies the behavior of animals in their natural environment, writes in the journal Applied Animal Behavior, “unpleasant sensations and pain keep the animal from engaging in improper behavior that could lead to death.”

“Just as pleasure encourages one to do right things, such as feeding, mating, and… keeping warm or cool.”

Balcombe, however, believes that scientists should not look at behavior solely from an evolutionary perspective.

He points to another example. Rats fed the same food begin to show a preference for the unfamiliar food after three days.

The simplest explanation for this is that eating a variety of foods allows you to get a wide range of nutrients or avoid becoming overly dependent on a limited food source.

But perhaps this is too narrow a view, and in fact rats are simply bored with their food and want to try something new? Perhaps they just want a thrill. Both explanations seem quite plausible, depending on the approach.

Likewise, sexual behavior can be a consequence of evolution and the struggle for the survival of the species - and at the same time bring pleasure.

It is precisely because reproduction is so important to survival that evolution has made the process of reproduction so enjoyable that animals want to do it even when conception is undesirable or impossible.

If all this is really true, it becomes clear why the joys of sex are available not only to us humans.

Physiological features of puberty

The genital organs of male dogs are a complex system consisting of testes with appendages, vas deferens, accessory gonads and penis. During intrauterine development and in the first few weeks (sometimes days) of a puppy’s life, the testes are located in the abdominal cavity. With the correct formation of the body, by 2–5 months they descend into the scrotum. As a result of certain factors, such as stress, cold or fear, the testes may rise into the pelvic area. This is a normal reaction of the body of a young animal, which should not cause concern to its owner. The male penis has a small bone inside, and along its entire length and closer to the base there are cavernous bodies that swell during arousal. Swelling of the bulbs and corpora cavernosa can be observed even in small puppies, and this is not a pathology.

Questions about breeding males

Many owners of male dogs sooner or later have a question about the need to breed their pet. In solving this problem, owners rely on the prevailing belief that a fence to prevent mating will adversely affect the health of the animal. Many years of observations and experience do not confirm this view. Males that do not participate in mating, under normal housing conditions and adequate feeding, can be distinguished by strong physical and psycho-emotional health. An untied male becomes more aggressive and difficult to control. In addition, if the pet is rarely brought to the bitch, problems with the genitourinary system may appear: prostatitis and prostate adenoma. To prevent negative changes in males not used for breeding, it is recommended to castrate them.

Statement 3: “Some species of gulls form stable female pairs...”

The study "Sex Ratios in Western Gulls" states that in the western gull colony on Santa Barbara Island there are only 3 males for every 5 females. Since these birds are physically deprived of the possibility of creating natural pairs, 10% of females, after mating with males, form partnerships with other females in order to jointly care for the offspring. While one gets food for itself, the other hatches eggs or guards the chicks, after which they change. This is comparable to what would happen if a grandmother and mother took care of a child, living in the same apartment - while one is at work or in the store, the other takes care of the child, but gay activists persistently call this phenomenon in birds “homosexuality.”

Statement 8: “Drosophila flies”

Recognition of a mating partner in these flies, as in many animals, depends on visual, acoustic and chemical signals - pheromones. Some mutated males have lost the ability to sense the male pheromone Tricozen-7 and mistakenly try to court male flies. This is not because they are attracted to males, but because, unable to correctly recognize the signal, they mistake them for females. Researchers call this "gender blindness" and emphasize that same-sex courtship is an atypical behavior associated with inadequate functioning of the nervous system. At the same time, they note that such males do not show any changes in heterosexual courtship or copulation.

Positive points

Often, dog owners can watch how very young puppies jump on and mount similar individuals on themselves, imitating the mating process. This happens during the game and does not have negative consequences. As scientific practice shows, this model of behavior helps male dogs develop useful skills that will allow them to mate more successfully with female dogs in the future. In addition, in a similar way, young dogs determine the hierarchy among themselves. Such games should not be stopped, especially in cases where breeding is planned.

Enforcement measures

Increased production of sex hormones leads to young males losing control of themselves. This causes inconvenience for the owner and others. For example, quite often growing puppies imitate sexual intercourse with furniture, the owner’s leg and nearby people. The main methods of correcting such behavior should be, first of all, training and active games with the dog. Punishments in this case are unacceptable and often ineffective. In addition to physical activity, you should reduce your caloric intake. If the above measures do not lead to a positive result, you need to think about medicinal care for the animal. To do this, it is better to consult a veterinarian, who will select special medications that reduce sexual activity. One of them is the “Four with a Tail” product, produced in tablets and drops. This drug is intended to regulate sexual heat in males and to delay and interrupt estrus in females. Before using the drug, you should consult a specialist and carefully study the instructions.

Giraffes and golden showers

Giraffes are the tallest land animals on Earth, with a black tongue and very beautiful eyes framed by long eyelashes. They may look rather awkward, but at a short distance they can outrun even a racehorse, and on rough terrain they can jump over barriers up to 1.85 meters high.

For many social media users, the giraffe is a romantic figure, an exquisite animal that roams somewhere far away on Lake Chad. But some people know there's something fishy about him.

mxhxvoid

Male giraffes kick females in the bladder area so that they urinate, so that the male can taste their urine and determine by taste how close the female is to ovulation. It's just that giraffes are [scum] animals.

Indeed, long millennia of evolution have taught giraffes to make rather strange tackles.

When meeting a female giraffe, giraffe researchers David Pratt and Virginia Anderson found that males will kick or nudge the bladder area to taste her urine.

When a giraffe pokes a female in the rump, she responds by releasing a stream, which the male catches in his mouth and tastes.

In this way, the male finds out whether the urine contains certain chemical compounds that indicate the female’s readiness to mate. But scientists are silent about how much discomfort such actions bring to giraffes.
