How to choose a cockroach repellent with boric acid

Cockroaches that have settled in a private house or apartment cause not only aesthetic inconvenience. Parasites are carriers of dangerous diseases, so the fight against them must begin immediately after the discovery of the first individual.

The most effective means of killing cockroaches are made from chemical components that are harmful to humans and pets. It is for this reason that many people prefer to use a safe folk remedy - borax.

There are several effective recipes that can be easily prepared at home.

Description of the drug

Borax is a natural mineral compound that contains salts of boric acid. It has been known for over 4,000 years and is located deep in the earth. Borax crystals have absolutely no odor. When used correctly, Borax is a relatively safe remedy. It is widely used in households as a bleach, a cleaning agent for various surfaces, and has antifungal, herbicide and disinfectant properties. It is used to clean household appliances, remove stains from clothes, and neutralizes various odors, acting as a natural freshener. Borax heals plants in the garden and keeps them fresh.

In addition, this natural substance is successfully used as an insecticidal agent to kill cockroaches, bedbugs, ticks, fleas and other pests.

Borax powder has the following characteristics:

  • a white or colorless, odorless substance;
  • it is difficult and takes a long time to dissolve in water;
  • decomposes when heated and exposed to strong acids;
  • has an alkaline reaction and hydrolyzes.

Borax often works much more effectively than professional insecticides. This substance has been tested by time. The powder sticks to the antennae and mouth of the cockroach and immediately penetrates the body shell. Irreversible processes begin in the pest’s body: the digestive tract is destroyed, the liquid becomes viscous, and severe dehydration begins.

The poison quickly spreads throughout the body, affects the nervous system, so paralysis begins within a few hours. Soon, the entire large insect population becomes infected from the cockroaches that have eaten the bait or brought it on their paws.

Pharmacological action of the drug

  • Head. Feeling of dizziness, which intensifies when going down;
  • Hair. The ends of the hair become lumpy even immediately after hairdressing procedures. Eyelashes become brittle and curl, which leads to eye irritation. It happens that the lower eyelid completely turns inward;
  • Face. The tip of the nose in young women turns red. The complexion becomes pale and takes on an earthy tint. The face looks unhealthy and there are signs of suffering. Herpes appears on the lips and skin around the mouth;
  • Stomach. The digestive function is impaired, this entails the appearance of vomiting with mucus, which is accompanied by pinching and pressing pain;
  • Intestines. A long-term inflammatory process can provoke the occurrence of persistent spasms, which are accompanied by a burning sensation;
  • Oral mucosa. The most characteristic symptoms are ulcers (aphthae) on the oral mucosa. Due to pain in the mouth, the patient often refuses to eat. After eating, symptoms may appear that can develop into a chronic form;
  • Breast. In women during lactation, nipple damage occurs, which is aphthous in nature. Because of this, the process of breastfeeding becomes almost impossible. The milk becomes excessively thick, and its secretion becomes more abundant. Its taste changes for the worse, and the child may refuse it.

After starting to take Borax, patients note the following changes in the body:

  • There is a feeling of dryness in the mouth;
  • An allergic rash may appear;
  • Nightmares plague me;
  • Laziness and apathy interfere with work and study;
  • Increased irritability;
  • The scalp becomes crusty;
  • Herpes appears on the lips and near the mouth;
  • The state of chronic constipation is abruptly replaced by diarrhea;
  • The occurrence of sudden vomiting;
  • Eating fruit is accompanied by diarrhea;
  • During urination, the patient feels pain, and at night - enuresis.

How to use a cockroach poisoning agent?

The powder can be used in its pure form, dissolved in water or mixed with other ingredients.

First of all, you need to start cleaning the kitchen. Cockroaches love to settle in secluded places that are close to food and water. They hide in cracks, crevices and baseboards. The powder should be scattered near the wall, moving away the stove, refrigerator, kitchen furniture, dishwasher, microwave oven. Next, you should treat the inlet and outlet in the pipeline in the wall, under and behind the toilet, under the sink and bathtub.

It is imperative to follow the recommendations for use of the product:

  • Sprinkle Borax powder in a thin layer;
  • Do not wash or wipe the treated areas for 2-3 weeks, since during this time the drug retains its activity;
  • to cover as much space as possible, you can dilute the powder with warm water in a ratio of 1:10 and wash the walls;
  • For the best effect, it is recommended to add boiled egg yolk and a little potato to the preparation, stir thoroughly, form balls from this mass and place in the corners.

The substance begins to act most actively on days 5-6. At this time, you can see a huge number of poisoned insects on the floor, which can only be carefully swept away.

Borax powder - a remedy for cockroaches and other insects

Boric acid and its salts have long been used to control pests and diseases.
Borax antiseptic powder is a borate-based cockroach repellent. The drug is an intestinal and contact insecticide, approved for use in homes, cafes, children's and medical institutions.

Chemical properties of Borax powder and effect on cockroaches

Borax is a natural mineral containing boric acid salts (decahydrate and anhydrous sodium tetraborate).

These are the active components of the drug Borax, which is used as an insecticide and acaricide. The product kills cockroaches, ants, ticks, bedbugs, fleas, and earwigs.

Description of Borax powder:

  • White or colorless substance, odorless.
  • Does not dissolve well in cold water.
  • Hydrolyzes, the solution has an alkaline reaction.
  • Decomposes when heated and exposed to strong acids.

Borax powder sticks to the legs, antennae and mouthparts of the cockroach and is partially absorbed through the body membrane. Borax in the body corrodes the digestive tract, binds fluid, which leads to dehydration.

The poisonous effect spreads to the nervous system, causing paralysis of the insect after a few hours. Cockroaches that eat the bait infect the entire colony.

Instructions for use and precautions

Cockroaches prefer to live in warm, secluded places, located closer to food and water, and take refuge in any cracks and voids.

Therefore, first of all, Borax powder is poured in the kitchen behind the stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher.

They treat the entry and exit points of water pipes in the walls, under sinks, behind the washing machine, and toilet.

How to use Borax for cockroaches:

  1. Spread the powder in a thin layer.
  2. Do not wipe or wash treated surfaces for 2 weeks.
  3. Dilute part of the powder with warm water in a ratio of 1:10, wash the walls and cabinets.
  4. Do not treat surfaces used for food preparation.
  5. Add boiled egg yolk and potatoes to the powder and mix.
  6. Roll the mixture into balls and place them in places where insects gather.

During processing, you need to use gloves and a medical mask to prevent inhalation of the powder.

Unused remains should be stored out of the reach of children and pets.

Advantages and disadvantages

The range of pesticides is annually replenished with new drugs. However, boric acid and its salts do not go into the shadows due to their advantages over other insecticides.

Powder to fight cockroaches can be scattered dry, diluted with water and mixed with products that serve as bait. During processing, a protective suit and respirator are not needed.

The acute toxicity of borax is insignificant, but the disadvantage of the substance is its slow elimination from the body.

Borax becomes dangerous to people and animals if it accumulates (cumulative effect).

Contact with eyes, skin, or respiratory tract may cause irritation, shortness of breath, and headaches.

Conclusion about the properties of the drug Borax

An affordable, easy-to-use insecticide makes it much easier to control cockroaches.

In just 5–7 days, the pest colony will be all over. The drug with low toxicity can be used to control cockroaches in bedrooms, kitchens and child care facilities.

Precautionary measures

Boric acid has always been very popular. The product is quite simple to use. It is available and not as harmful as other insecticides. The toxicity of Borax is not that significant, but this does not mean that precautions should not be taken during processing. In any case, protective equipment never hurts. When baiting cockroaches, you must use gloves, a face mask, and also wear a special suit or unnecessary clothing, which can then be thrown away. During processing and during the following days, care must be taken to ensure that children and animals do not touch the product.

After the procedure, you should take a shower, rinse your nose and mouth. Despite the fact that the toxicity of the drug belongs to hazard class III, its main disadvantage is that it is very slowly eliminated from the body, where it can enter when a person inhales. If the substance accidentally ends up on the skin, in the respiratory tract or on the mucous membrane, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse the area with plenty of running water, otherwise the consequences may not be very pleasant. Borax causes skin irritation, headaches and dizziness, shortness of breath, cramps and general deterioration of health.

If the drug gets inside the body, it is necessary to urgently rinse the stomach with plenty of water and call an ambulance. This is very dangerous, since 5 g of the substance can fatally poison a small child, and 15-20 g can kill an adult. Under no circumstances should the powder be stored near food. It must be carefully packaged and kept out of the reach of children and animals.

Borax is an inexpensive, readily available, and easy-to-use insecticide that is effective in getting rid of cockroaches. It can be purchased at any hardware store.

Borax based recipes

Poisonous baits are prepared using acid to kill parasites. The substance itself is odorless and tasteless, so it does not attract parasites.

Food products are used as additional ingredients: sugar, flour, eggs, gelatin, potatoes, etc. The “delicacy” is placed in places where parasites most often appear. Let's look at the most common recipes.

Borax and egg yolks

This method is the simplest, you will need to do the following:

  • mix raw yolk with borax (50 g of powder per yolk);
  • mix thoroughly until a homogeneous mixture is obtained;
  • the composition is laid out in small slides on a board;
  • The bait is placed in places where barbels move.

This method is relevant for small numbers of parasites. We must not forget that the “food” spoils quickly, so you will need to periodically prepare new ones.

If the cockroach population is large, then borax with yolks loses its effectiveness.

Borax, sugar and starch

This recipe is characterized by a longer effect compared to the previous version.

For preparation you will need the following ingredients:

  • borax – 220 g;
  • powdered sugar – 70 g;
  • starch (preferably corn) – 65 g;
  • vanilla sugar for an attractive aroma – 25 g.

First, the bulk components are mixed, then water is added little by little. The mixture should be thick and hold its shape well.

Subsequently, small balls are molded from the finished composition, which are laid out on sheets of cardboard, and not on the floor or other surfaces.

This will make the cleaning process easier and will allow you to monitor the process of eating the bait.

Borax, potatoes and eggs

To use another effective and simple recipe for cockroaches with borax you will need:

  • boil one large potato in its jacket;
  • peel the tuber, mash to make a puree;
  • hard boil an egg, peel, chop, add to mashed potatoes and stir;
  • add 30 g of borax.

Small lumps are created from the finished mixture, and then laid out wherever the Prussians were seen. If necessary, a new bait is prepared, spoiled balls are replaced with fresh ones.

When using the recipes listed, it is important to prevent possible contact of cockroaches with water.

To do this, close the taps tightly at night and remove condensation and remaining liquid in the bathtub and sinks.

An aqueous solution of borax is poured into small containers and placed under pieces of furniture, in the sink, near the trash can. Insects will come here to quench their thirst.

Similar manipulations are repeated daily, before bedtime. In the morning, the containers are removed, and all surfaces where they were located are wiped with a wet cloth.

How to get rid of cockroaches? We are preparing poison for cockroaches!!!

What is Borax for cockroaches?

Residents of multi-storey buildings are familiar with problems with parasitic insects in the kitchen and beyond. Old houses, especially those with garbage disposals, often become havens for cockroaches. Red locusts are incredibly prolific and will spread throughout your home in a matter of weeks once they enter your basement or waste drain. In addition, they are distinguished by incredible survivability.

It is very difficult to fight cockroach colonies; moreover, this requires the use of potent drugs. One of the most effective is Borax for cockroaches. It helps to quickly get rid of uninvited guests.

What is Borax?

This powdered product, widely used in the fight against insects, has long been used in European countries, including Russia. The powder is based on boric acid, which has a detrimental effect on cockroaches and prevents them from breeding indoors. The substance is an intestinal insecticide, but it also acts when the insect comes into contact with the powder. The packaging of the drug is a dense bag weighing 200 g. It can also be packed in a cardboard box.

The cost of the product is low, which makes it recognizable and in demand. Effective action has been proven by positive customer reviews. Using the drug "Borax" you can get rid of cockroaches and other insects in a few days.

Description of the powder

According to the instructions, Borax is a poorly soluble, odorless, white substance. During hydrolysis, an alkaline reaction occurs, so if you place the powder in hot water, it will begin to dissolve.

The product has a third hazard class, which makes it possible to use it in residential premises. It is effectively used in public catering establishments, educational institutions, clinics and hospitals. The drug is considered safe, but you should still avoid direct contact with it.

If you carefully study the composition, you can understand what Borax is. The main component of the product is borax, which contains boric acid salts: anhydrous tetraborate and sodium decahydrate. They have a poisonous effect on the body of pests.

This powder is not a highly toxic substance. But in order to protect pets and children, it should only be poured into inaccessible places: crevices, cracks in the floor or narrow spaces between furniture and walls.

Rating of cockroach powders: Top 12

Modern powdered preparations against cockroaches vary greatly in composition and degree of impact on pests, as well as toxicity, harmfulness and methods of application.

Tiuram

Initially, Thiuram was used in rubber and cable production as a vulcanizing additive. That is why the powder is often called bus or cable powder. It contained a very toxic component TMTD (tetramethylthiuramid sulfide), the antisecticidal properties of which were discovered completely by accident. In its original form, the substance was banned due to its extremely negative effects on warm-blooded animals.

Action "Borax"

The drug acts as a paralyzing substance. When an individual comes into contact with it, the poisoning process begins to take effect. The insect carries the poison on its antennae and legs to areas where the largest number of pests accumulate. One cockroach is capable of spreading Borax powder throughout the premises, which can result in the death of several dozen members of the species.

The damage occurs to the insect's nerve fiber system, which leads to its complete paralysis. After contact with the powder or bait, the individual begins to be poisoned; the drug penetrates the insect and kills it. When a cockroach infests a colony, within a few days the number of pests decreases several times. But you should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and not wash off the powder for three weeks.

  • The powder is sprinkled on the habitats and movements of cockroaches: baseboards, kitchen shelves, horizontal surfaces near and under the sink and other hard-to-reach places.
  • The method described above has one significant drawback - this way you cannot apply the product to vertical surfaces. You can get rid of this drawback with a fairly simple solution. Borax is diluted in warm water in a ratio of 1:10, after which the solution is mixed well. The prepared solution can be used to wash walls, cabinets and other vertical surfaces.

Drawing conclusions

Borax is an easy-to-use and affordable insecticide that helps control domestic cockroaches.

Its main advantages are accessibility and safety for pets. But practice shows that with a large number of cockroaches it is better to use more effective means - aerosols or gels.

Application of Borax

To effectively remove arthropod tenants, you should know their habits and favorite places where colonies are most often found. They usually prefer to live in warm places. For example, behind the kitchen stove, sink or on the floor under furniture, in the kitchen or bathroom behind appliances and toilets. Access to food and food is one of the main conditions for establishing a colony. When studying the instructions and understanding what Borax is, you need to take into account its certain amount of toxicity.

Sprinkle areas where cockroaches accumulate with a thin layer of the preparation. It is not recommended to wash the floor and walls after treatment for 21 days; throughout this period the substance actively continues to fight pests.

Instructions for use

For treatment, different potencies of Borax are used - from C3 to C1000. In addition, there is LM potency.

Choosing the correct potency and dosage is not recommended to be done on your own - this issue should be entrusted to professionals.

The generally accepted rule is that low potencies can be taken more often, several times a day, high potencies - up to once a month.

Precautionary measures

There are some rules when working with the drug. You only need to contact it with gloves and a respirator. To avoid borax vapors from entering the upper respiratory tract, it is necessary to prepare baits in well-ventilated areas. Inhalation or contact of the product with the skin carries a certain amount of danger, since the active substance is removed from the body for a long time.

The cumulative properties of tetraborate carry a certain risk to humans. In case of contact with mucous membranes, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath and irritation may occur. The areas where the substance interacts with the skin and integument should be thoroughly washed.

Store the remaining amount of powder out of the reach of children and pets.

Tips for using the drug "Borax"

Before you start processing the corners and walls of the apartment, you need to mix the powder with sugar. The sweet treat will serve as bait and will quickly attract mustachioed gluttons. The next step is to dilute the powder in warm water in a ratio of 1:10; this solution should be used to treat all surfaces and walls, except for the hob and table used for cooking.

Another effective way is to prepare balls with powder, boiled yolk and potatoes. They should be placed in cockroach habitats and in the corners of the room. This option is only suitable if there are no animals in the apartment. It is very important to block insects’ access to water at the beginning of disinfection at home. You need to first turn off the taps and wipe the bathroom and sinks dry. Before use, you must once again read the instructions in detail to understand what Borax is.

Folk remedies for cockroaches - how to quickly get rid of them using effective means

Cockroaches can cause a lot of trouble. And, of course, they are the most “uninvited guests.”

Not everyone can turn to special organizations that deal with pest extermination. Many people want to destroy “uninvited guests” themselves. Some people achieve good results, others don’t. Let's look at the most popular folk remedies.

Boric acid and borax

Housewives often fight cockroaches with boric acid.

Boric acid is a weak acid. It does not guarantee 100% results, since it is almost impossible to detect all insects. And in order to destroy them, you need to know where they live.

Advantages:

  • low cost;
  • versatility.

Flaws:

  • low efficiency;
  • high toxicity.

The acid enters the digestive tract and begins to destroy the body.

These insects are omnivores and do not have sufficient intelligence, so they can easily taste boric acid.

How to use

  1. Buy a few sachets of boric acid at your local store.
  2. Place poison in pest habitats. You can sprinkle boric acid in the rooms. But experts recommend sprinkling boric acid in the toilet and bathroom. Since these are the places that cockroaches visit most often. They go to the toilet and bath to drink water.
  3. If boric acid does not help, then additional products must be used.

Borax

Borax is also a common pest control product. Borax is salt:

  • strong foundation;
  • boric acid.

This substance is widely used in technology. But it is also used to kill insects.

Benefits of borax:

  • low price;
  • low toxicity.

Instructions

First you need to determine the target area:

  • it is necessary to clean the target area (cleaning must be done before preparing the solution);
  • detect unpleasant odors in the room in which the treatment will be carried out (if there are unpleasant odors, then you need to get rid of them);
  • mark zones (laying larvae and eggs, feeding, and habitat);
  • check fans and air conditioners; if they are detected, then turn on the electronic devices; so they will be forced to crawl out;
  • carefully check the habitats of pests.

Preparatory work:

  • Next, you need to thoroughly mix boric acid and borax.
  • Now you need to filter the solution (various methods can be used).

Poison distribution:

  • the resulting solution must be poured into a plastic container;
  • mix all components thoroughly;
  • now you need to mix the solution with water;
  • pour the resulting mixture into a spray bottle (spray);
  • treat all surfaces.

These insects are omnivores and do not have sufficient intelligence, so they will easily taste anything you put in front of them.

Pyrethrum

We all know what pyrethrum is. This is a wonderful flower of the Asteraceae family. But few people know that poison for cockroaches is made from this flower. Pyrethrum flower is ground into powder, which is sold in stores.

Pyrethrum can be used for more than just killing cockroaches. It is also effective against:

  • helminths;
  • ticks;
  • bedbugs

Benefits of Pyrethrum:

  • non-toxic;
  • versatility (can be used to kill other pests);
  • environmental friendliness (the powder is made from natural raw materials);
  • the active ingredient of the powder is practically non-addictive in cockroaches;
  • good value.

Flaws:

  • exclusivity (the powder can only be purchased in specialized stores);
  • valid for a limited time;
  • low efficiency.

How does this powder work?
The components of the powder block the transmission of impulses in pests. Therefore, after a few seconds the cockroach dies. As a rule, pyrethrum is ordered from online stores (most often foreign). The limited quantity of products is due to a lack of raw materials. The flower is demanding in terms of maintenance conditions.

Therefore, our compatriots often use ordinary pharmaceutical chamomile instead of pyrethrum. Naturally, chamomile extract is less effective.

You can also make the powder yourself:

  1. collect flowers;
  2. dry (preferably in the attic);
  3. grind into powder (you can use a blender or coffee grinder for this);
  4. You need to add a little soap before use.

Using pyrethrum is very simple:

  1. First you need to purchase a household spray bottle or spray bottle from the store.
  2. Prepare a solution (add a little water to the powder).
  3. Next you need to refill the sprayer.
  4. Treat the room.

The components of pyrethrum powder block the transmission of impulses in pests

Ammonia

Ammonia is a special solution of ammonium hydroxide. This is a clear liquid that has a rather pungent odor.

This product is often used for household purposes (cleaning plumbing fixtures, removing stains). But ammonia can also be used to destroy “uninvited guests.” Most often, furniture and floors are wiped with a solution of ammonia. Insects smell a nasty smell and leave the room.

You can buy this chemical at a regular pharmacy. Instructions for use:

  1. Preparation of the solution (proportions: a teaspoon of ammonia is used for one liter of water).
  2. Treatment of the premises. First of all, the resulting solution needs to be treated with furniture and floors. If necessary, you can treat other surfaces (plumbing, windows, etc.).
  3. In order to permanently get rid of pests, it will be necessary to carry out repeated treatments of the premises.

Be sure to follow the following precautions:

  • use rubber gloves;
  • ventilate the room;
  • use a respirator or bandage.

Essential oils

Essential oils are liquids of various colors. Characteristics:

  • oily base;
  • have a strong odor;
  • weakly colored;
  • insoluble in water.

Benefits of essential oils:

  • price;
  • easy to use;
  • have a so-called prolonged action;
  • environmentally friendly (absolutely safe for people).

Of course, essential oils can be used to control pests. But the effectiveness of this remedy has not been proven.

Instructions for use:

  • buy essential oils or make your own;
  • treat the necessary surfaces.

What exactly needs to be processed:

  • shells;
  • lockers;
  • countertops;
  • tables;
  • sofas and beds, etc.

Of course, essential oils can be used to control pests, but the effectiveness of this remedy has not been proven.

Kerosene and turpentine

Kerosene is a flammable liquid. It is made from petroleum products. Many people think that kerosene is only used to kill nits and lice. But that's not true. Kerosene is an excellent remedy for fighting cockroaches.

The result of kerosene treatment speaks for itself:

  • adult individuals are destroyed;
  • the larvae are destroyed;
  • a lasting effect is achieved.

How does kerosene work:

  • has a suffocating effect;
  • has a paralyzing effect;
  • disorienting.

The poison instantly penetrates the respiratory tract and has its effect. Kerosene is a fairly toxic substance. Therefore, it is imperative to use personal protective equipment (gloves, mask or respirator).

Instructions for use:

  1. Buy kerosene at a pharmacy or store;
  2. Prepare the solution. There are three options:
      proportions: 1:9:1:12; composition: water, honey, kerosene and shampoo;
  3. proportions: 3:2:1; composition: shampoo, kerosene, and olive oil;
  4. only kerosene.
  5. Refill the spray bottle.
  6. Treat the floor, furniture, objects.

Most often, only kerosene is used.

Turpentine is a liquid mixture. This mixture is made from tree resins. You can buy turpentine at a pharmacy.

Benefits of the substance:

  • pungent pine smell;
  • price;

The substance must be used with caution. You need to treat the room with turpentine in the same way as with kerosene.

Freezing

Cockroaches are very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. If the room temperature drops to -1Cº, the pests die. Therefore, the “freezing” method is often used to control insects.

The main advantage of the method is its simplicity. To kill insects, you only need to lower the temperature in the room.

What should the room temperature be:

  1. -10Cº insects die within two minutes.
  2. -5Cº insects die within thirty minutes.

The described method has many advantages:

  • safety;
  • harmlessness;
  • simplicity.

Instructions for use:

  1. Coordinate the event with your neighbors.
  2. Turn off the central heating. To prevent pipes from freezing, drain water from them.
  3. Open doors and windows indoors.
  4. Leave the premises for several hours.

The freezing procedure should only be carried out in winter, when the temperature drops to -8C.

The main advantage of the method is its simplicity - to kill insects you only need to lower the temperature in the room

DIY traps and baits

You can get rid of uninvited guests in a modern way - with traps. There are various traps available in stores.

Main types:

  • adhesive;
  • electrical;
  • ultrasonic;
  • poisonous.

There are different glue traps in stores. But they all have the same operating principle. A special adhesive tape holds the insect on the surface. The tape attracts the attention of insects with a pleasant smell.

Advantages of the trap:

  • absolutely safe;
  • easy to use;
  • does not contain any toxic substances;
  • can be purchased at any hardware store.

Where to set the trap:

  • ventilation holes;
  • near large household appliances (refrigerator, washing machine);
  • under the sink.

Now let's look at electrical traps. They are very popular. Because they work automatically.

Principle of operation:

  • the bait emits a smell that attracts pests;
  • hitting the electric bait, the cockroach is destroyed using an electric discharge.

Advantages of an electric trap:

  • durability (the device can work for many years);
  • practicality (does not require maintenance);
  • The device is non-toxic.

Ultrasonic baits emit ultrasonic waves to repel pests.
The device affects the nervous system of insects and causes a feeling of anxiety. Poison traps are also popular. There is bait inside the poison trap. The bait has a specific smell. The main advantage of poisonous baits is their affordable price.

Prevention of occurrence

Adviсe:

  • Comply with hygiene and sanitary rules.
  • Keep the premises clean and tidy.
  • Wipe down the bathroom and sinks regularly.
  • Close containers with water.
  • Cover the trash can with a tight lid.
  • Clean up after pets.
  • Clean the floor regularly.
  • Do not leave dirty dishes.
  • Store all products in special containers.

Reviews of folk remedies

Is Borax safe for natural home cleaning?

No longer just a cleaning product our grandmothers used, borax is enjoying new popularity as a wonder ingredient for natural cleaning. It can be found in many recipes for making homemade cleaning products or for preserving homemade beauty products. It's also the main ingredient in my popular all-purpose cleaning and laundry detergent. Moreover, it is a common ingredient in many homemade recipes that our children love so much.

Since I continue to ask a lot of questions about the safety of borax, let's take a fresh look at the controversy and see how it stacks up.

What is borax solution?

Borax, of the ingredients, is sodium tetraborate or sodium borate, not boric acid (hydrogen borate). Sodium tetraborate (hereinafter referred to as borax) is a salt of boric acid, but it is not chemically the same. Apparently this is a common misconception on the Internet, and if you read an article that claims to be dangerous, talks about the dangers of boric acid, or says that they are the same thing, I do not consider that article to be credible.

Borax and precautions

Borax is extremely alkaline, making it irritating when used undiluted. It makes sense not to use any form of borax, sodium borate or boric acid as an eye wash or skin scrub. You should also never drink or ingest it in any way. However, this still doesn't answer the question of whether accidental indirect contact (in things like cleaning products) is safe. Here's the full material safety data sheet if you want some easy reading. This data sheet gives a safety rating of "1" which is the same as baking soda and salt. (I wouldn't recommend putting them in your eyes, constantly rubbing large amounts into your skin, or taking large amounts daily). The Environmental Working Group lists borax with a safety rating of 5-6, although, again, the studies used contained both borax and boric acid, as well as warnings regarding ingestion, eye contact, or long-term use undiluted.

What about boron?

As with many things in the world of healthcare, there is a downside to the challenges. Boron is a trace element (atomic number 5) and a fascinating character (because I'm a dork and easily fascinated by chemistry). It turns out that there is a biological need for boron in small quantities. Research shows that boron plays a key role in the functioning of healthy cell membranes and is especially important for bone health. Note: The boron family can be considered non-toxic to humans in smaller quantities, but these products are more harmful to insects (hence their use as a pesticide):

In biology, borates have low toxicity to mammals (similar to table salt), but are more toxic to arthropods and are used as insecticides. Boric acid has a mild antimicrobial effect, and a natural boron-containing organic antibiotic is known. Boron is essential for life. Small amounts of boron compounds play a strengthening role in the cell walls of all plants, making boron essential in soils. Experiments indicate a role for boron as an ultra-trace element in animals, but its role in animal physiology is unknown.

But is Borax toxic or not?

There are many conflicting answers based on different sources. Key points I found in my research: Current warnings are for eye irritation, undiluted skin contact, and ingestion. The FDA and ECA (European Chemicals Agency) have banned borax as a substance of serious concern, but have provided no documentation other than the hazards at the soil level.

According to this EWG article, the European Union and Canada have banned the use of borax not only in food, but also in body care products intended for children under 3 years of age. This may be reasonable since it is applied directly to the skin (not the case with cleansers or detergent residue). I have not been able to find any research that shows that borax in natural cleaning products in diluted amounts is dangerous unless it comes into contact with the eyes or is ingested. The EWG Skin Base classifies borax as a moderate hazard, but most studies and listings involve its use in foods. In case of accidental ingestion, immediately contact your local emergency department or the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222.

Indications for use

"Borax" is an effective homeopathic medicine for the following diseases:

  • Children's stomatitis. In case of wounds, dry mucous membranes and pain in the oral cavity;
  • Diarrhea. There is an admixture of mucus in the stool. Loose stools are accompanied by the occurrence of aphthous inflammation;
  • Diseases of the female reproductive system, infertility. Menstruation that is painful, unsuccessful attempts to become pregnant for more than 1 year (with regular unprotected sexual intercourse);
  • Cough. Attacks of dry cough, in the morning and in the evening, accompanied by pain on the right side of the chest, sputum rarely comes out.

Boric acid for cockroaches

Boric acid, history of application

This substance is, in fact, the very first chemical agent to combat cockroaches. Boric acid is a white crystalline powder, odorless, slightly soluble in water. Boric acid began to be actively used in medicine from the mid-19th century as an antiseptic, primarily because a better alternative to boric acid was not yet known. In those days, boric acid was very popular due to the fact that it had no taste, odor and did not irritate the skin and open wounds, while killing germs quite effectively. You can still buy boron powder and preparations based on boric acid in the pharmacy. They are used as an anti-inflammatory, antifungal agent and in the fight against other skin diseases.

The second main use of boric acid was to control insect pests, primarily ants and cockroaches. In this role, boric acid has also long been considered one of the most effective methods, before the advent of specialized anti-cockroach products. For any insect, boric acid is a deadly poison if it enters the gastrointestinal tract. A very small dose of poison will be fatal to the pest - only 2-3 mg. The most difficult task is to force the pest to eat bait with poison, since the acid will kill the insect only after getting inside.

Tips for using boric acid are similar to each other and represent a procedure that has been proven over decades:

  1. Place baits with boric acid in places regularly visited by cockroaches (for example, it is often recommended to mix boric acid with sugar, flour or egg yolk).
  2. Sprinkle boric acid powder in places where cockroaches constantly move, primarily around places where insects get moisture: sinks, pipes, toilets, bathrooms.

If you start looking for recommendations on the use of boric acid as a means of fighting cockroaches, you will definitely be shown the following advantages:

  • High efficiency, all cockroaches will definitely be destroyed;
  • Cheapness of boric acid, optimal price-quality ratio;
  • Absolute safety of boric acid.

However, it's not that simple. After all, why was it necessary to invent complex and rather expensive traps, sprays, gels and other methods of fighting cockroaches, if boric acid is such a universal and safe remedy?

The Downside of Boric Acid

Already at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century, studies began to appear in medical journals on the effect of boric acid on the human body, primarily on the body of children and pregnant women. These studies clearly showed that boric acid is not at all safe for humans. Indeed, it does not cause irritation when entering the body. But boric acid tends to accumulate in it, since it is poorly susceptible to dissolution and is very slowly excreted from the body. A dose of 15-20 g of boric acid is lethal for an adult, but for a child it is only 4-5 g. In the past, fatal cases of boric acid poisoning have been reported. The pharmacy will definitely tell you that boric acid is strictly contraindicated for small children and pregnant and lactating women. The acid itself and preparations based on it are used today exclusively for external use.

Boric acid is also unsafe for your pets. Cockroach bait may well be eaten by a parrot, cat or dog. If the bait becomes their favorite food, they will eventually get severe poisoning.

It is for these reasons that boric acid as an insecticide is gradually being abandoned, preferring to buy special traps such as Raptor, Combat, Brownie, Mashenka.

Safety regulations

The negative consequences of using boric acid can certainly be avoided. However, you should remember that it is not always as miraculous as your elderly relatives or some unreliable online and print publications will tell you. First of all, this is due to the fact that cockroaches are very cautious creatures and will not necessarily fall into the bait you set, and even a few surviving individuals are a guaranteed new infestation of the apartment in a short period of time. However, you can try this method, for example, in your country house, garage, warehouse or any other room where the entry of children and pets can be restricted.

Precautions when using boric acid:

  1. Keep out of the reach of children.
  2. Avoid getting acid into the body through the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth, work with gloves or wash your hands thoroughly after use.
  3. Isolate the treated area from children and pets.

Analogues of the drug

  • Bryonia is a drug similar to Borax. It is capable of causing and treating oral aphthae in children. A characteristic symptom of this drug is that the child does not latch on well or refuses it completely. But as soon as his mouth is moistened, he begins to vigorously suckle at the breast. Patients who have encountered this drug know that when taking it, there is a strong feeling of dryness in the mouth. To encourage your baby to breastfeed more effectively, he should moisten his mouth with liquid;
  • "Mercurius" is a substitute for "Borax", when in case of diseases of the oral cavity, which are accompanied by hypersalivation, saliva literally drips from the baby's mouth. With diarrhea, clearly defined straining (tenesmus) is observed. This should be sufficient to separate these drugs;
  • "Aethusa cynapium", popularly called dog parsley, is given to children in cases where crying and intestinal colic are accompanied by strong and frequent vomiting, which are characteristic of this remedy;
  • "Arum triphyllum" - its distinguishing feature is the intensity of the symptoms. Inflammatory processes in the oral cavity are usually accompanied by pain and the appearance of scabs near the mouth and nostrils. For Borax, a characteristic symptom is the baby's crying preceding urination. The urine is hot, with a foul, pungent odor;
  • “Petroselinum” is used quite rarely in domestic homeopathy, although completely undeservedly - the remedy is indeed very effective. The symptoms are very similar to Borax, but there is an unexpected, strong and sudden urge to urinate. In addition, this remedy is taken for gonorrhea;
  • "Graphites" helps to cope with the problem of eyelashes curling into the eye;
  • "Natrum carbonicum" is similar to "Boraxom" and is good for itchy skin, in particular the back of the hand. Small ulcers appear around the finger joint;
  • Sepia is the most effective remedy for eliminating small ulcers around the mouth.
