What sounds do beetles make?

The length of the insect is 7-16mm. The yellow-spotted longhorned beetle has an interesting feature: if disturbed, it makes a creaking sound. Like other species of longhorned beetles that produce sounds, the beetle uses a stridulatory apparatus that works on the “comb and nail” principle.

Frame and mirror

Contrary to popular belief, grasshoppers do not make any sounds with their paws. The stinging apparatus of insects of the order Orthoptera, which, by the way, includes not only grasshoppers, but also locusts and crickets, is located on the upper leathery pair of wings (elytra). Insects produce acoustic signals by rubbing the vein of one elytra (frame or bow) against another elytra, which is called a mirror.

It is interesting that in different species of Orthoptera the structure of the stridulatory apparatus is different, which allows them to produce different trills. If the beat frequency of the vein coincides with the vibration frequency of the second elytra, then the resonance of the sound system emits pure sound signals. If there is no correspondence, the insect’s trills are heard as separate clicks. Experienced chirping entomologists are able to determine which insect is producing it.

"Dragonfly Jumper"

The fact is that the instructive fable about the economical ant and the carefree dragonfly takes its origins from the work of the ancient Greek fabulist Aesop (only in his case the role of the dragonfly was played by a much louder “singing song” - the cicada). Aesop's legacy was reinterpreted by the French fabulist La Fontaine, who decided to replace the cicada with the grasshopper, which was more familiar to the French. Well, Krylov composed his fable, already based on the example of La Fontaine...

Largely thanks to the fable, the dragonfly has become a symbol of frivolity, idleness and excessive mobility. “Dragonfly” could be called either a restless child or a flighty woman. For example, Chekhov directly refers to Krylov’s fable when he titles his story about adultery “The Jumper.”

Interestingly, the word “grasshopper” carried similar symbolism. Suffice it to recall the heroine of the 1970 American film “The Grasshopper” (yes, “grasshopper” in English literally means “grass jumper”), the heroine of the 1978 Soviet film “Grasshopper” or even the hero of the 1973 Soviet film “We Go Alone to Battle” “old people”” (“Grasshopper” was his nickname for his apparent frivolity).

How does chirping happen?

A chirping grasshopper can often even be seen in the grass. Only he moves his legs and wings so quickly that it is impossible to understand what exactly is happening. However, scientists have discovered this too. The chirping process, as it turns out, occurs in most grasshoppers during the closing of the elytra. At the same time, they move in approximately the same way as the leaves of scissors. The grasshopper closes and opens the elytra, as a result of which a vibration of a certain purity is transmitted to them, and then rubs them against the frame of the bow. This is how a sound is heard that can be heard in the summer in a field or at the edge of a forest.

By the way, female Orthoptera catch the singing of their gentlemen with a special apparatus located on their paws. In some species the “ear” is located in the sternum area.

Cricket Reproduction

Crickets have polygamous relationships, each male is the owner of a certain territory, which is inhabited by several females who are part of a kind of harem of this male. If another male encroaches on the territory of this male, fierce fights occur between them.

An obligatory attribute of the mating games of these insects is the famous trills of crickets, performing their musical serenades, the male attracts the female for mating.

Crickets breed throughout the year, but their peak sexual activity occurs in the summer. A fertilized female cricket prepares holes in the ground where she lays her eggs, somewhat similar to bananas. During one oviposition, a female cricket can lay from 40 to 179 eggs.

After one to two months (depending on the temperature and the environment in general), larvae begin to emerge from the eggs. The larva in its appearance resembles an adult cricket, but in order to become one, it will have to go through 10 molts, occurring over 7 weeks, during which the body undergoes restructuring. After the last molt, the larva produces a normal, mature cricket.

House cricket

In the East, insects that produce beautiful melodies, such as the cricket and the cicada, were kept in special cages in homes, just like songbirds. And today, some exotic animal lovers keep crickets to enjoy their sounds.

To do this, use an aquarium, terrarium or special insectarium. Insects need systematic care. It is especially important to change the soil every 3 days, otherwise the unusual pet may die. Although crickets are predators in their natural habitat, when kept at home they are also fed plant foods: vegetables, fruits, and herbs.

The singing of crickets is very beautiful and varied. It's worth a trip out of town.

Locust

It is possible that a locust or grasshopper is giving a concert in your garden. This is the closest relative of grasshoppers, found almost everywhere except in the coldest areas. They feed only on plants.

Locusts have become notorious for their monstrous appetite and ability to gather in swarms of billions. Every day, locusts eat as much plant food as they weigh. It would seem that this is not much, only 2 g, but a flock of a billion insects already absorbs 2000 tons! In Russia, locusts live in the lower reaches of the Volga, Ural, Don, and Terek.

Locusts (small species of locust) have more modest appetites, but are found everywhere. They can be seen even in the center of a large city.

Types of grasshoppers

These representatives of the insect kingdom, inhabiting almost all corners of the Earth, boast a rare variety of external and behavioral characteristics. There are about 7 thousand species of such creatures on the planet.

And each of them is endowed with its own characteristics. Types of grasshoppers primarily differ in size. Representatives of some varieties may have a length of one and a half centimeters, no more. But there are also giants, whose size reaches 15 cm.

By the way, female grasshoppers are noticeably larger than males and outwardly differ from them in the presence of an ovipositor - a special device of significant size designed for laying eggs. In size it can correspond to half the length of the female’s body, so it is simply impossible not to pay attention to it.

Also, the types of grasshoppers differ in their very varied colors. The coloring usually matches the environment where the insects live, acting as a kind of camouflage suit for the grasshopper. After all, it makes it invisible against the background of vegetation and landscape.

The color can be monochromatic, for example, green, but the color scheme varies significantly, surprising with the versatility of color tones. Also, the coloring of the species can be very impressive and bright, complemented by stripes and spots. All this diversity can be observed in the photo of grasshoppers .

Some types should be described in more detail.

1. The steppe grasshopper is one of the giants among the grasshoppers of Russia. And the size of such insects can reach up to 8 cm. Their wings are underdeveloped, they are either very short or completely absent. The color of these grasshoppers is green, sometimes with a yellowish tint and a longitudinal border of the same color.

They are distributed in different regions of southern Europe, in steppes covered with wormwood, and in ravines covered with sparse bushes. These insects are few in number, and the number of representatives of the species on Earth is constantly decreasing.

2. Green grasshopper . Adult specimens of this species have a body length of about 3 cm, but in some cases they can grow up to 6 cm. These creatures are found in some European countries, in the Asian territories of our country up to the Far East, as well as in Africa.

The jump length of such creatures can be up to 3 m. In addition, they are able to fly. These creatures chirp so loudly that they can be heard at a distance of 100 m. Males attract their partners with such concerts.

3. Greenhouse grasshopper is one of the smallest varieties. But its representative is capable of jumping almost half a meter in height. Outwardly, they no longer resemble grasshoppers, but spiders, but have huge antennae. The color of such creatures is brown or gray, decorated with dark spots.

For the most part, this is a resident of the central regions of China, but together with plants, such insects spread westward to Europe, right up to the Crimea, and on the other hand, moving east, they even reached the American continent. These grasshoppers prefer to live in greenhouses and conservatories, which is why they are called that.

4. Ball-headed grasshopper . This is a whole family of large grasshoppers, representatives of the long-whiskered suborder. The body sizes of such insects are large. Their head is large, spherical in shape, and the elytra are shortened. In various regions of the former USSR there are about 7 species of such grasshoppers. They are also found in Eurasia and northern Africa.

5. Giant weta - one of the largest and heaviest grasshoppers. The weight of such insects can reach up to 70 g and even rise higher. They are found in New Zealand, but not in the entire archipelago, but only on a very small island called Little Barrier, and are considered endemic. This creature can quite successfully defend itself from enemies with its huge (the length of the lower leg is 5 cm) and strong hind legs.

But such limbs do not help them jump; grasshoppers are apparently too heavy. But apart from the size, in appearance they are quite similar to their relatives from other species or crickets. Such insects can settle in caves, open spaces and forests of the mentioned island, as well as near populated areas.

6. Steppe fat man . The variety of such insects is considered extremely rare. Today, their range has decreased significantly. The existence of this species has been recorded in the Krasnodar Territory, in the vicinity of Rostov, in Kabardino-Balkaria, and in certain other regions of Russia. This is a black grasshopper , whose body has a bronze tint. There are indeed spotted individuals of this variety.

Role in a person's life

Taking into account all the stages of development of a grasshopper, its life expectancy is just over a year. The adult lives only one summer. Some hobbyists keep these insects at home in a terrarium. It can be installed in a regular glass aquarium with a lid. It is better to use a larger container.

The bottom of the terrarium is covered with river sand. Based on what grasshoppers eat, they are offered live butterflies, spiders and flies as food . You can additionally give vegetables, fruits, salad leaves, and spikelets of cereals. It is better to seat females during the breeding season to avoid fights and cannibalism. Each of them should have its own territory at this time.

Much more often, grasshoppers are used for gastronomic purposes. Who considers them a tasty delicacy? These insects are eaten in China and some countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In street markets and small Chinese and Mexican restaurants, you can enjoy fried grasshoppers flavored with chili pepper and lime juice.

In Japan, jumpers are collected from rice fields and then cooked in soy sauce and sugar. Latinos collect insects from alfalfa fields and fry them in a little oil, adding garlic, salt and lemon when serving. In this way, local farmers “kill two birds with one stone” - they rid their crops of pests and provide themselves and their families with food.
