“The Human Centipede” - reviews of the first and second parts of the film

Review

Today will not be an ordinary review. No sorting out the pros and cons, analyzing the acting, or anything else. with The Human Centipede .
But before we start the conversation, I warn you: if you have recently eaten, are eating now, or plan to eat in the near future, then I recommend refraining from reading this article .

Because even a verbal description of the plot of today's film can kill your appetite seriously and for a long time.

Reviews from critics and frayed nerves of viewers

Of course, innovations and original moves in art will always be valued, but exploiting completely worthless images without even trying to put them into some kind of plot is simply not talented.

The film certainly had its positive aspects, but overall it is impossible to even measure the wave of misunderstanding and disgust that The Human Centipede met. Reviews from film critics were also not particularly enthusiastic, although the film's trailer was very promising. So, is the movie really as disgusting as it is described?

Summary

A strange film made in a strange time. Nauseating, disgusting, sick in the head and completely insane. It is recommended to watch only for those who want to go on a diet, but cannot curb their appetite.

But in some ways he is still outstanding.

Because in an era when the news shows the charred corpses of the victims of the next terrorist attack, when criminal smut is shown on TV in prime time, when children watch sickening Japanese perversions online, there are few things left in the world that can penetrate the psychological armor and cause disgust in people. level of pure idea.

The “human centipede” is capable.

Reviewer: Maine House

As a postscript, here's the trailer. If anyone is suddenly interested.

It's all the Americans' fault

The answer to this question will be unequivocal: yes, that’s exactly how disgusting “The Human Centipede” is. Reviews from even the most sophisticated lovers of everything strange and unusual (such as “The Green Elephant”) scream that the film carries absolutely no artistic value or ideological value, and the acting is equated to the level of the script, which is practically absent. The plot of the film revolves around the hackneyed theme of the unsuccessful journey of two American tourists to evil Germany to the evil Germans. Of course, the girls didn’t bother to learn at least superficial German before the trip, because all people in the world should know English. That is why unlucky tourists find themselves in an unpleasant situation caused by their ignorance of the language and local mentality, as well as the lack of basic survival instincts. However, as practice shows, without the naivety and stupidity of the Americans, the development of the plot is simply impossible.

Trouble doesn't come alone, especially when you're from the USA.

It's actually hard to describe what The Human Centipede is about. The reviews seem to hint to us: nothing. These unlucky tourists ended up getting into an accident and decided to go out to look for help, even though it was starting to rain heavily. The accident occurred, of course, in the forest, apparently because it is only possible to create the ambience of a real horror film there. The young American women did not even entertain the thought of waiting out the rain in the car for a minute; they immediately bravely rushed towards ephemeral salvation in the thicket of the forest. It is no wonder that in the forest they found a house with an owner of a very unpleasant and even repulsive appearance. A bad impression of an unfamiliar man did not stop the girls from accepting glasses of water from his hands, only to then fall unconscious from the sleeping pills added to the water. The same plot can be seen in hundreds of similar films, but it is simply amazing to what farce “The Human Centipede” takes it. Reviews of the film most often focus on the intellectual level of the main characters and the complete lack of plot.

Sick fantasy and childhood dreams of a surgeon

The film does not end well, because a happy ending would be contrary to the principles of the genre. The strange owner of the house turns out to be a real maniac with unhealthy ideas, who is also a surgeon and a lover of conducting experiments on people. In the cozy laboratory of an out-of-mind old German, the American women are awaited by a Japanese man who does not know any words except curse words in his native language. Having gathered the whole company together, the surgeon tells them in broken English that he is going to make a fascinating-looking human centipede out of them. The way he was going to do this would not be dreamed of by a normal person even in his worst nightmare. Having sewn the experimental foreigners together by connecting their “back parts” to each other’s mouths, the frantic surgeon could not find a place for joy when his experiment was crowned with success. By this point, the viewer already understands that watching “The Human Centipede” could be limited to getting acquainted with the trailer.

Main characters

  • Dr. Heiter is a former surgeon who, after retiring, decided to do a terrifying experiment on living people. He treats his captives with particular cruelty and does not think about the moral side of his actions.
  • Jenny is one of the tourists who became the last of the human centipedes. She begins to get sick due to the fact that her body cannot perceive the remnants of what reaches her from the previous two people.
  • Lindsay, the girl who became Hayter's prisoner, attempted to escape, but the surgeon caught her. For this she was punished and was placed in the center of the centipede.
  • Katsuro is the “head” of the centipede. A tourist from Japan who was caught by a crazed maniac. At the end of the film he committed suicide, unable to endure such a life.

It could be worse

Despite the lukewarm reception from film fans and critics, The Human Centipede 2 soon appeared. Reviews for the film did not improve at all, and it was not even taken into account that the number of people stitched together had increased significantly. They say that the second part of the film is even more disgusting than the first, and the plot in it sags even more seriously. Although, it would seem - where is it worse? But Tom Six knows where, and confidently goes in this direction. Moreover, he so enjoyed exploiting the unhealthy idea of a common intestine for several people that he began filming the film “The Human Centipede 3.” Reviews from film fans who were lucky enough to see the first two parts are already filled with premonitions of something completely abnormal. Many believe that it is simply impossible to squeeze anything more out of this topic, but Tom Six only grins slyly at this. Who knows, maybe now he will sew the inhabitants of a small town together, and the inadequate protagonist will become the local mayor.

Corners of madness and rejection of the masses

Tom Six's film is unlikely to be shown in cinemas, and the sale of licensed discs is somehow very slow. Perhaps this is why the offended director decided to take revenge on the world by giving it a few more parts of the centipede? Released in 2011, The Human Centipede 2, whose reviews were even worse than the first, shook the imagination of modern film lovers, but not in a revolutionary sense. Tom Six did not bring anything new to cinema, if only because his seemingly original idea was drowned in not the best quality scenery and completely obscene acting. Some film fans joke that actors star in this director’s films solely for food, and many seriously believe that Six is blackmailing them. Hollywood is full of lovers of eccentric roles, but it is unlikely that any of them would even think of simply reading the script for “Centipede,” not to mention directly participating in the filming of a dubious film. So, the film “The Human Centipede 2” (reviews of which were very, very unflattering) was initially doomed to failure.

The Boundaries of Art

Following the example of Cheburashka, I will start from afar.

The question is: where is the line separating art from exploitation? How to draw this line?

Let's take the same pornography: in its best examples there is both a plot and acting. But only the most stubborn person can call porn a work of art.

This is not art and never will be. This is exploitation. But what's the difference?

Or horror movies. Many, even the most brutal of them - “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” , “Revenge of the Unborn” , “Saw” - are real art, and I am ready to testify to this under oath. I wouldn’t say the same about other films (for example, “Faces of Death” or “The Cradle of Nightmares”

And here's why: if "Revenge of the Unborn" is just an insanely cruel thriller about the dark areas of the human psyche, then "The Cradle of Nightmares" is the work of idiots who got their hands on a movie camera. And it is useless to measure the level of cruelty in both films - the difference between them is not in the amount of fake blood smeared on the screen, but in the fact that they are on opposite sides of the border separating cinema from film trash.

So: “The Human Centipede” is a film that straddles a border post and dangles its legs on opposite sides. And therefore the impression this film makes is unique.

“Human centipede” was parodied in the cartoon “South Park” ; the “centipede” spawned the production of toys, keychains, caricatures and other stuff. Why not cultural influence? Pure trash is clearly not capable of this.

What kind of animal is this?

Colorful but crazy villains

Be that as it may, Tom Six's negative characters turn out to be very colorful. Their acting, of course, does not take the film to a fundamentally new level, but at least it does not force the viewer to simply mindlessly spit on the film. For example, the villain from the first part justified his action and desire to unite people in a strange way with his love for a dead dog. The actor’s performance turned out to be very charismatic, but this is probably why I don’t want to see him in any more films. The main villain, who appears in the second part, suffers from an obvious mental disorder, and is also a whole walking warehouse of inferiority complexes. Both characters are quite interesting, but the script of the film still does not allow them to develop properly. The viewer is disgusted by the villains or even wants to run away, and this is the best proof of the level of acting.

The Human Centipede 3 (2015)

Year: 2015

Genres : Horror

Country : USA

Director : Tom Six

Actors : Eric Roberts, Bree Olson, Tom Six, Tom 'Tiny' Lister Jr.

A troubled prison warden, having trouble earning the respect of his inmates and the state governor, decides to implement a revolutionary punishment that could not only bring order to the prison system, but also save millions of dollars - literally bringing prisoners to their knees by sewing them into a giant centipede. out of 500 people.

Contingent and target audience

It is difficult to say for whom the film “The Human Centipede” was filmed. Reviews from critics tell us that the film was received equally poorly almost everywhere, and did not pay off at the box office at all. Fans of the most unusual and not entirely healthy may find the very idea of the film quite interesting, but in order to comprehend it, it is not at all necessary to watch the entire film. “The Human Centipede” causes disgust, nausea and reluctance to watch pictures of this genre, and after watching this picture the “Saw” franchise seems kind and fluffy.

I watched the film, but after the movie, so I didn’t feel disgust and pity, well, as much as I could have. That is, at first I thought it was because of the sauce. The idea of the film is good and seems to be original, but how was it implemented? . . I personally didn't like it. The actions of the centipede chains, especially the heads, kill with their passivity, as if they like to remain in this position despite the sobs and groans. Spoilers now. . . The Japanese cordially apologized for the defecation, but easily left the girls to die with his corpse with his own throat cut, when their tormentor was two crawls away, and they could have dealt with him very easily (if only he had left the lamp and not taken a small piece of glass) . The doctor’s actions are also passive and incomprehensible. Is part of the centipede infected? Let him die, I can’t help a doctor, we’ll find new ones, because it’s so easy and they’ll never catch me. Have the police arrived? You have to behave suspiciously, or better yet, poison them, so that later a whole crowd will come for them. Couldn't you poison one? Take the syringe, but don't try to do anything with it until you see him or even after, and don't use your gun yet. They left alive, and even for a warrant? Well done. The episode with the newspaper is also incomprehensible. What did he want? Teach obedience? Why then did you abandon this activity? He only punished for misdeeds. Or he missed the centipede dog he killed, and then realized that this one was better. What was he counting on in the end? Kill detectives with a warrant and run away quickly without legs and without a piece of neck? No, he was just thinking about his ass without even thinking ahead, a simple instinct of self-preservation. I understand, if he killed himself in an embrace with a centipede, and before that, it’s okay. That is, we see a simple psycho who wanted to have some fun, and not a crazy doctor who had the idea to create some kind of unique creation. And in the end, the girl will be rescued in at least an hour or a short distance away (they promised to get the warrant in 20 minutes, but it will take them to get there, write it out and back, although they got it done faster), two detectives with a hastily issued warrant are delayed, and she will live long enough in this situation, people could not survive in such conditions. That is, the film is stupid, unrealistic, empty. Dieter Laser, in my opinion, did not play the role very well, in his eyes, gestures, facial expressions there was not enough that said - this man is crazy, you should be afraid of him, etc., only the appearance of an unbalanced ordinary person, and there are many of them they are not interesting in any way. Having such a great idea, it was possible to do something much better, in my opinion.

PS Read the manga Franken Fran, they show a mad doctor, or rather 100% doctor and scientist, but 100% not a person.

The film is simply unpleasant. Films like this shouldn't exist. They talked about the psychological armor that this film breaks through, but no one is afraid that when this armor is broken for all people after a number of viewings of such films, being brought up on them) nothing will matter where good and evil are. THERE WILL BE COMPLETE resignation to the absence of these boundaries. And then psychopaths will rule the world. Get this directorial mediocrity and crap off the screen. There are no boundaries in art, but art must carry positivity and ideas, understanding the world in a different way for the sake of something, but not sadism and suppression of the will. This film is not a genre, but the sick imagination of a mediocre director who rudely looks at the world, namely through... I won’t say through what))). I personally am shocked by his perverted consciousness and poor inner world. The very idea that equal independent organisms can be made into a whole by sewing holes together is already HOLE! And that’s all his poor, jaded imagination could do?!)))

Anna answers:

This is the concept of postmodernism in its purest form, if you are afraid that the boundaries of good and evil will collapse, then do not be afraid, they have long been destroyed. When Nietzsche wrote that “God is dead,” this meant the death of the moral principles of “don’t kill, don’t steal.” The point is not that the criminal code should be abolished, it was nevertheless created for the sake of the survival and stability of society, but the point is that there is no more “bad or good”, whether you like it or not (and what is prohibited by law is not prohibited by law, you must agree , in the sense of dry definitions, does not equal “good - bad” from the point of view of different individuals and philosophical concepts).

Is A Clockwork Orange good or bad? Never mind, he is charming, we even sympathize with him when he is treated with draconian methods. Is the killer good or bad? Who cares, especially if it’s filmed like “Natural Born Killers.” There is no hell and heaven, before birth and after death there is just darkness and emptiness, or it’s unclear what, which means that the most important thing is the road from mother to coffin. No one is interested in trying to achieve a warm place somewhere after death by “good” deeds on the road, because firstly, there is no guarantee what exactly is there, and secondly, it’s boring and boring and usually “don’t like it”. Laughing at everything serious, even morality (so what? Quite a “point of view”), whoever is first is right, deconstructing all sacrosanct ideas and concepts, simply because “I’ve had enough.” Evil is attractive, and so on. This film hits the stress center of the brain and releases cortisol into the blood from sympathy (that’s what the process of imagining that you’re the one eating poop is called), but it didn’t and won’t have any effect on psychopaths, they don’t have this brain center works medically. And they can come to power, just as before, without a centipede. And there has been acceptance of this for a long time, because postmodernism has been blooming as a paradigm for more than a hundred years. Hunter Thompson, Palahniuk, Kubrick, Banks, and a bunch of other people have already talked about it and are talking about it. Another thing is that logically, for comfort and survival, society still needs “cortisol” from seeing the suffering of another person, so that we do not completely cut each other off. Whether it is necessary to create such films for this is a rhetorical question.

What you say is correct. But we still need to look at the world and people more optimistically. One movie will not turn a normal person into a psychopath. And if the psyche is stable, then even a hundred will not change. Another thing is that for children and nervous people it’s really better not to see this movie and not even know about it :(

The film can certainly be called vile. The feeling of disgust appeared already from the explanation of the doctor’s purpose. However, the film certainly achieved its goal, namely, to create a strong impression on the viewer. For obvious reasons, most of these impressions are negative, but it’s better (may viewers/readers who didn’t like the film precisely because of its “trashiness” forgive me) such a film than frankly no film at all – i.e. a film that leaves no impression AT ALL (as, for example, happened with the film “Operation Dead Snow”-2). Therefore, we can say that the film is a masterpiece - if only because it left such a strong impression that it is enough for one viewing (not because of the lousy acting, not because of the plot, but because of the presentation of all of the above)

[Answer]

Main House responds:

As for being a masterpiece, this is unlikely, but the film stands out from the crowd. It is what it is.

The idea of the film is really sickening, I can’t wrap my head around it... It’s not even the sight of the centipede that gives me goosebumps, but the scene where the surgeon calmly explains to the victims the diagram of this centipede... Damn it, I was tempted to watch this film! Curiosity, damn it... Now I regret it. Yes, the film amazes and shocks, but this is not art, but a shitty movie that shows the limits of human perversion. Everyone has their own cockroaches, but in the director’s head these cockroaches are also linked into a centipede, apparently.

This is not the first site on which I read negative reviews on the topic of this film.. And what other ones!! People so persistently impose their point of view, express their emotions, even negative ones.. But this is success =) no matter how disgusting it may be film, but it, however, created a good buzz! Everyone who watches it leaves an indelible impression and the film is remembered for a long time.. From this I conclude that the author succeeded in his idea. They know him, they talk about him, they discuss him. Anti-advertising is also PR) Personally, I liked the film... I wouldn’t call it a “masterpiece”, of course, but overall the idea is not bad, it’s original. Moreover, very shocking moments were not filmed (like, for example, in the saw.) There are no entrails lying on the floor, liters of blood and smeared brains. All the most disgusting moments are completed by our imagination... This is another question regarding the colorfulness of the imagination, suspiciousness, etc. I even managed to eat while watching =) although maybe I’m not entirely healthy))

Yes, in fragments... but there is no desire to watch the whole thing. If the first one shows at least some kind of idea and novelty, then the second one is simply a perversion. It seems to me that such films are not created for a second release.. the idea is already hackneyed) By the way, about the first part... the flaws in the script are very visible) The scene when “segment No. 2 ″ ran away, or rather ran away, from the “operating table”... why did she think of biting through the belts only at that moment?) and why she decided to return for her friend and drag her on herself, although it would have been more logical to run alone to people and call for help)) well..if the Russians had been in their place, the plot would have been much shorter))
