Commander for the Colorado potato beetle - instructions for use and reviews

When growing potatoes, one of the main problems that any gardener faces is protecting potato bushes from attacks by various pests and, above all, the Colorado potato beetle. This overseas guest, who has been living in our area not so long ago, only since the 50s of the last century, has already bored everyone with his gluttony and insatiability.

If you don’t fight it, it can destroy all potato plantings in one season, and then switch to other garden plants of the nightshade family: tomatoes, eggplants, sweet peppers, physalis and others. Therefore, gardeners have not come up with any methods to combat this glutton and protect their potato plantings.

Many so-called folk remedies are completely ineffective, and it’s a pity, but you have to turn to chemicals for help. Currently, several dozen different drugs have been registered to combat the Colorado potato beetle, but even among them it is difficult to find a drug that would be 100% effective. One of these drugs is Commander.

At least the reviews about it are mostly very positive.

“Commander” - description of a systemic insecticide

The drug "Commander" is a contact-intestinal insecticide of the systemic action of the chloronicotinyl class, intended to combat various gnawing and sucking pests of vegetable and garden crops - aphids, thrips, miners, wireworms, Colorado potato beetles, grain flies, psyllids, bedbugs, whiteflies, butterflies and other insects.

Potato processing

“Commander” is very often used for processing potatoes as a means for treating potato tubers before planting, and also as a means for spraying the above-ground parts of the plant.

Treating potatoes with “Commander” against the Colorado potato beetle before planting significantly reduces the likelihood of potato plantations being affected by this pest.

Many gardeners often have a question about how to treat potatoes with “Commander” before planting, but this is a very simple process. First, a solution is made from 2 ml of “Commander” and 10 liters of water, the seed potato tubers are laid out on a horizontal surface in one layer, sprayed with the prepared solution and dried. After complete drying, the tubers are turned over and processed again with further drying - at this point the pre-sowing treatment of potatoes is completed, the seed is ready for planting. On average, processing 100 kg of potatoes before planting will require 1.5 liters of the working solution of the drug.

If a potato plantation is affected by aphids, Colorado potato beetles or wireworms, potato tops, shoots and leaves of the plant should be treated with Komandor solution at the rate of 2 ml per 10 liters of water. During the growing season, potato beds are treated with a solution concentration of 1 liter per area of 1 sq.m. The waiting period in this case will be approximately 30 days.

How to process cucumbers and tomatoes

The drug rids cucumbers and tomatoes of pests such as thrips, aphids, and greenhouse whitefly. To prepare the solution, 5 ml of the drug is dissolved in 10 liters of water. Treatment of cucumbers and tomatoes with “Commander” is carried out by spraying the plants during the growing season; within three days the pests in the treated areas will die.

The consumption of the working solution will be 1 liter per 10 square meters. m of plantings.

Onion processing

“Commander” will rid onion plantings of aphids and thrips; to do this, you need to dissolve 1 ml of the drug in 2 liters of water and treat the onion beds using the drip irrigation method.

The consumption of the working solution will be 1 liter per 10 square meters. m of plantings. The waiting period in this case will be approximately 3 weeks.

The drug will clear rapeseed plantings from pests such as rapeseed flower beetle, cruciferous flea beetle, and cabbage aphids. To prepare the solution, 5 ml of the drug is dissolved in 10 liters of water. Rapeseed should be treated with Komandor by spraying it during the growing season.

The consumption of the working solution will be 0.25 liters per 1 hectare of plantings.

Processing apple trees with “Commander”

Treating apple trees with “Commander” will rid fruit trees of sucking pests and weevils. To do this, you need to spray one hundred square meters of apple tree plantings during the growing season with a solution of 2 ml of “Commander” and 5 liters of water.

The waiting period will be about 30 days.

Treatment of winter wheat with “Commander”

The drug will rid winter wheat plantings of pests such as pests, bugs, thrips, leech, bread beetle and aphids. To prepare the solution, 5 ml of the drug is dissolved in 10 liters of water. Wheat is treated with “Commander” by spraying its plantings during the growing season.

The consumption of the working solution is approximately 0.25 liters per 1 hectare of plantings.

General characteristics of the drug

Commander is a contact-intestinal insecticide, its maximum effectiveness is manifested in the fight against:

  • Colorado potato beetle;
  • wireworm;
  • aphids;
  • bedbugs;
  • leaf beetles;
  • scale insects;
  • locusts;
  • thrips;
  • spider mites;
  • whiteflies;
  • weevils;
  • butterflies;
  • mole crickets;
  • and even small rodents.

Commander is capable of destroying not only mature individuals, but also larvae laid by pests, which is a very significant advantage (not every product can boast of this).

The active ingredient of the drug is an extremely strong organic poison called imidacloprid. Its concentration is estimated at 200 g per 1 liter.

According to the instructions, this product is not phytotoxic for vegetable crops, that is, it does not have a detrimental effect on the structure of plants if the recommended dosage is followed. It has a hazard class of 3 and a class of 2 for maintaining stability in the ground.

This insecticide comes in the form of a water-soluble concentrate, packaged in 4-, 10-, 20- and 100-mm packages (also sold in 1- and 5-liter containers for treating larger areas). The drug Komandor successfully maintains its effectiveness against the mentioned pests at different temperature conditions.

Due to the fact that it is water-soluble, it is necessary to carry out additional treatment after precipitation (the entire preparation is washed off even with light rain).

Terms of use

The use of the “Commander” drug is divided into two main stages: preparing the working solution and treating the area with it.

Preparation of working solution

The drug for the Colorado potato beetle “Commander” is a concentrate that requires mandatory dilution with water.

We carry out all manipulations with the concentrate with gloves!

To prepare the working solution, do the following:

  • take a bucket, pour a liter of water into it and add 1 ml of concentrate;
  • mix everything thoroughly and for a long time - about 5 minutes;
  • then add more water - a total of 5 liters of working solution should be obtained;
  • Mix everything again and pour it into the sprayer.

This amount is enough to process one hundred potato beds.

If we talk about the drug called “Commander MAXI”, then it is more concentrated, and therefore is diluted in a different ratio - 15 liters of water are added to 1 g of the drug. This amount of product is enough to process 3 acres of potato land!

Application of working solution

Before you start spraying plants, you need to protect yourself from contact with the drug. To do this, we wear clothes made of thick fabric, preferably with long sleeves and full trousers. We use goggles to protect our eyes, and a cotton-gauze bandage or respirator to protect our respiratory tract.

Let's move on to plant processing:

  • we spray the preparation as evenly as possible, making sure that it gets onto the green mass, both on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves - this way you will ensure the best result;
  • as mentioned above, processing can be carried out even in the heat, since “Commander” is resistant to high temperatures and ultraviolet radiation;
  • however, when planning treatment with this product, it is advisable to monitor the weather forecast - there should be no rain or strong wind on this day;
  • spraying of potato beds is carried out at least three weeks before harvest;
  • during processing you cannot smoke, drink or eat;
  • It is not allowed to spray the garden with “Commander” against the Colorado potato beetle during the flowering period of the plants, as it is toxic to bees.

The drug “Commander” belongs to hazard class 3 and is a moderately dangerous substance. At the end of the treatment, you should thoroughly wash your hands, wash your face, rinse your mouth, remove all clothes and wash them at high temperatures.

If for some reason the drug penetrates the oral cavity and then into the body, then the first thing you should do is drink a large amount of warm water and induce vomiting. Next, it is advisable to take activated carbon and consult a doctor.

Safety regulations

The insecticidal drug Commander has a certain toxicity, which is why you should be careful with it. However, if the key safety requirements are met, its use will not cause dangerous situations:

  • The duration of work with the drug should not exceed 3 hours.
  • The use of personal protective equipment (special protective suit, waterproof gloves, respirator, etc.) is mandatory.
  • After treatment, at least 20 days must pass. Only after this time will the tubers completely get rid of the toxic substances of the Komandor remedy, and the potatoes can be eaten.
  • During the potato processing procedure (especially when spraying), it is strictly forbidden to eat or drink. Vapors of toxic substances instantly settle on food, and over a fairly considerable distance, so you should avoid eating.

    It is allowed to start eating only after removing all clothes and taking a shower (not a bath).

  • Smoking while processing potatoes with the drug is strictly prohibited. It’s better to endure it and smoke later than to do it on the spot and get poisoned by toxic fumes. They come in through a cigarette, not through an open mouth, so smoking with a mask is still a bad idea.
  • If there is a slight wind, be sure to stand in its direction (when spraying the Commander). If you stand against the wind, the potatoes will not be processed well because particles of the product will blow away. And they will blow right into your face, causing severe poisoning. Of course, in windy weather in general, it is recommended to completely abandon the plant treatment procedure.
  • All pets should be removed from the treated area and kept away from the area for at least 24 hours.
  • You should not follow advice on using this product found anywhere. It is necessary to carefully study the instructions that come with the purchased drug Komandor. Only she will reliably tell you how to behave correctly with the existing insecticide.

In case of poisoning or direct contact with the drug, the following actions must be taken:

  • remove all protective equipment;
  • carefully and leisurely wipe the affected areas with a cotton or gauze sponge (you should just wipe off the product and not rub it in);
  • rinse the affected areas of the body with warm water for at least 10 minutes;
  • Finally, these same areas of skin are washed with soap and water.

If the suspension (or any other form of the drug) gets on the mucous membranes (nose, eyes, etc.), it is important to rinse them thoroughly with water, according to the instructions above, and be sure to visit a doctor.

How the drug works and preparation of the solution

The action of the product occurs as follows. The chemical penetrates into the plant, poisoning potato leaves and stems, which turns them into poisonous food for insects. One small piece of the plant will be enough to kill the insect.

Please note! The effect of the drug is not lost when exposed to sunlight or moisture. To treat the area, 1 spray will be enough. Each type of packaging contains detailed instructions

How to use Commander for processing potatoes and other crops

Today, Commander is considered the best remedy against the Colorado potato beetle. It was invented recently and, judging by the reviews, immediately became out of competition with other means of protection against this voracious insect.

Commander has a detrimental effect on beetles in a very short time, and this is almost independent of the weather. The effect it produces is simply fantastic. The beetles present in potato beds quickly die, and new uninvited guests may not appear until next year.

The Commander insecticide is toxic not only to harmful insects, but also to humans or domestic animals. Therefore, you need to use it against the Colorado potato beetle, strictly following the instructions. The manufacturer guarantees that if its recommendations are strictly followed, this drug will not cause any harm to people, but will completely clear the area of Colorado beetles.

In addition, the drug will protect roses, currants, cucumbers, watermelons, and conifers from pests. An analogue of this product is Confidor.

Action

The active component penetrates the insect's body through contact, intestinal route. The bulk of pests die at the time of spraying, when the poison falls directly on the chitinous cover. Further destruction of Colorado potato beetles occurs due to the accumulation of poison in the leaves. The poison enters the esophagus during feeding.

The minimum dose of Komandor poison leads to disruption of the functioning of the nervous system, and the transmission of impulses slows down. Paralysis and death occur almost instantly. It takes 14 days to completely destroy the Colorado potato beetle population on a plot of land. There is no need to re-process.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  • The Commander can be easily purchased at a cheap store;
  • it effectively destroys Colorado potato beetles and does not need to be used frequently;
  • it also protects the bushes from other pests;
  • Commander works in hot sun and rainy weather, since after it is absorbed, its active substance penetrates the crop. Therefore, it can be used in risky farming areas;
  • Beetles have no immunity to the Commander.

Flaws:

  1. If you do not use the drug exactly according to the instructions, you can harm your health;
  2. If you use Commander close to apiaries, it can poison the bees.

Commander Plus

Since potato tubers can be processed before planting, a special modified version of the drug called Komandor Plus was invented.

It is intended specifically for not very strong, pre-sprouted tubers. Commander Plus is produced in tandem with the drug Energen AQUA, which improves productivity and alleviates stress in plants resulting from chemical treatment.

In general, we can say that Commander Plus does not have any strong differences from Commander. The goals and method of application are the same, it’s just that the first one is a more gentle and useful option.

Commander Plus is designed for processing sprouted tubers

Overall I was pleased with the Commander. The number of Colorado potato beetles has decreased significantly; I found many dead insects on the ground, which indicates that the drug really works.

I learned about this poison in the second half of the summer season, so I treated the potatoes once. But this was enough for me to be convinced that the Commander was able to help. We have always been plagued by a huge number of wireworms and Colorado potato beetles, but their attacks stopped immediately after using this remedy.

The condition of the garden as a whole largely depends on its owner; if he puts his soul into it, works hard and protects his crops from attacks by pests, then a rich harvest will not be long in coming. But you should always choose high-quality and proven products in order to avoid causing harm to plants and, first of all, to yourself as much as possible.

Compatibility with other products

Attention! You cannot mix Commander with alkaline compounds.

Analogues of the drug are Bombardir Aqua (acts on the intestines of pests, destroying them), Anti-Colorado, Confidor Extra.

Commander is mixed with Epin (accelerates growth, increases immunity), Zircon (promotes the development of the root system), Ribav Extra (intensifies the growth of plants and roots), Maxim. These drugs accelerate the emergence of seedlings.

Attention! You cannot mix Commander with alkaline compounds.

Analogues of the drug are Bombardir Aqua (acts on the intestines of pests, destroying them), Anti-Colorado, Confidor Extra.

Composition of the Commander

This drug contains only one active ingredient – imidacloprid. It is often used in a mixture with other chemical components that are involved in the sanitization and disinfestation of potatoes (and not only). Suitable for use both in agriculture and at home. The release form is designated as a water-soluble concentrate.

The Komandor product can deteriorate at certain temperatures, however, in the conditions of growing various crops, it is impossible to reach the melting point of this drug - 136 degrees. The only requirement is a temperature not lower than -5 degrees, because under such conditions imidacloprid will begin to lose its beneficial properties.

Compatibility and analogues

The drug Komandor can be used with other drugs if the latter do not give an alkaline reaction. If this happens, the potato plants will suffer irreparable damage and deteriorate.

It is best to combine Commander with the following drugs:

  • Ribav Extra;
  • Zircon;
  • Epin.

These products promote the growth and development of potatoes, increase productivity, and are also insecticides and fungicides.

As for analogues, you can replace the Commander with the following means:

  • Confidor Extra;
  • Anti-Colorado;
  • Bombardier Aqua.

When combining these agents there will be no adverse reactions, and the plants will receive exceptionally good results.

Precautions when working with Commander

The insecticide has been assigned the third class of hazard to humans. "Commander" must be diluted in a special container that is not used for cooking and has nothing to do with food.

When spraying plants, you should use personal protective equipment and wear a change of clothes or a robe. While working, you should not be distracted by smoking breaks, snacks or drinks. Upon completion of crop processing, clothing should be changed, and the face and hands should be washed with water and a disinfectant.

Pets and children should not be allowed near sprayed plants. And if you have an apiary, you should take care of the bees. Simply close the taphole for 6-8 hours after treatment.

First aid

The recommendations below are intended only for providing FIRST aid, after which you should immediately consult a doctor and follow his instructions! DO NOT SELF-medicate!

  • If Commander gets on your skin, blot it with a cloth or cotton wool, being careful not to rub it, then rinse the area generously with running water or a weak soda solution.
  • If the drug gets into your eyes, they should be rinsed under running water for 15 minutes, keeping them open.
  • If the drug gets into your lungs, go out into fresh air, catch your breath, then wash, change clothes and consult a doctor.
  • If the Commander gets into the digestive organs, drink two or three glasses of water with activated carbon at the rate of 1 g of carbon per 1 kg of body and induce vomiting. If you lose consciousness, you must not induce vomiting!
  • After providing first aid, you should in any case consult a doctor.

The drug “Commander” is a merciless killer of the Colorado potato beetle

Every year, gardeners fight the Colorado potato beetle, trying to preserve the potato harvest. The striped robber, due to its biological characteristics, is very tenacious. It easily travels tens of kilometers through the air and is capable of entering diapause for several years, waiting out hungry years in the soil. Mechanical and traditional methods of combating it do not always help, especially if the pest population is large. Chemicals called insecticides come to the aid of potato growers. One of them is the drug “Commander”. To use it for protection, it is not at all necessary to wait until the tubers sprout. Treatment of potatoes with Komandor before planting is no less effective. It will protect the plants when the sprouts just emerge from the ground and are most vulnerable, and the beetles are in search of food after winter sleep and are especially voracious and actively breeding.

Active substance and release form

The active substance in the product, which is responsible for the process of destroying pests, is imidoclaprid at a content of 200 g per 1 liter.

Available in the form of a special soluble concentrate intended for dilution in water. It can be packaged in bottles of 4, 10, 100 ml, and also produced in ampoules of 1 ml.

Commander is available in bottles or ampoules

Processing order

Treat in dry weather

Despite numerous reviews from gardeners who assure about the ability of the insecticide to protect potatoes to maintain its effective action even in rainy weather and with abundant watering, in order to achieve a high result with a greater likelihood of combating the Colorado potato beetle, it is recommended that they treat the plants in dry and windless weather, when There is no rain in the forecast for the near future. This will allow the active toxic substance to be better absorbed into the cells of the potato plant. On the day of spraying vegetables, experienced gardeners do not recommend watering the bushes.

Preparation of working staff

Prepare a liquid for spraying or watering potatoes at the rate of 2 ml of active agent per 10-liter bucket of water. It is convenient to do this by first dissolving the specified amount of insecticide initially in a liter of liquid, mixing it thoroughly to form a suspension, and then increasing the volume of the working composition to the required amount.

It is recommended to process vegetable crops using a watering can when watering, or with a sprayer if the method is chosen in the form of spraying. This can be done in one of two possible ways:

  • by spraying on foliage and stems or watering potato bushes already planted in the soil, while the instructions for the product recommend that in order to obtain the most effective result, spray the plants using a freshly prepared composition, wetting the foliage evenly with it,
  • method of using commander to treat potato tubers before planting them in beds, for which they are laid out in a row, carefully processed and then dried; many people prefer to cover the potato tubers treated before planting with film, and after they are completely dry, they are planted in the soil using the usual method.

general information

Commander is a type of insecticidal drug designed to kill parasitic insects. Treatment with this drug is indicated for the destruction of aphids, Colorado potato beetles, thrips, mole crickets, whiteflies, and rodents. The use of Commander is allowed for processing any varieties of potatoes. Treatment with this drug is effective against both adults and larvae. The principle of action is based on damage to the insect’s nervous system with a nicotine-derived poison – imidacloprid. This substance enters the body, causing paralysis and atrophy of all vital functions of the insect: movement, nutrition, so the pest dies.

Commander+ for potato processing

You can treat the area with the drug in 2 ways:

  • Through a sprayer
  • During watering.

The plant can be processed at any stage: pre-planting treatment of tubers, irrigation of tops and soil during the period of active growth. The maximum effect is observed within 1 month from the moment of treatment, but the product is completely removed from the plant tissues after 50 days, which means that by the time the crop is harvested there will no longer be any toxic substances in the tubers.

The principle of operation of Commander is that the active components penetrate the tissues of the green part of the potato, tubers and soil, insects come into contact with the treated surface or eat the plant and are poisoned.

Characteristics of the Commander:

  1. Economical consumption, so it is beneficial to use the product over large areas;
  2. Suitable for use with any potato variety;
  3. The poisons contained in the composition do not poison plant cells and only affect insects;
  4. Can be used throughout the growing season;
  5. Multiple treatments are usually not required. The product accumulates in plant tissues, and growing shoots are already protected from attack by pests;
  6. The drug is effective against almost all insects;
  7. Suitable for use in all climatic zones and weather conditions;
  8. Over the years, insects have not developed immunity against the Commander, so he consistently performs well;
  9. Insects are killed 2 hours after treatment. Complete extermination of the population occurs after 1 day.

It is important to know! This drug kills not only pests, but also beneficial insects, such as bees. Therefore, the use of the drug near the apiary and during the flowering period, when bees are actively pollinating plants, is strictly prohibited.

Instructions for use

To protect tomatoes and cucumbers from the invasion of vesicles, aphids, and greenhouse whiteflies, prepare a suspension of 1 ampoule per 2 liters of water. The consumption of the working solution is 1 liter per 10 square meters. m. To prevent the appearance of codling moths, mites, aphids, moths, and leaf rollers on the apple tree, use a liquid prepared from 2 ml of poison and 5 liters of water. The consumption will be 5 liters per 100 sq. m. Spraying is carried out once a month during the growing season. To destroy leaf phylloxera, mites, and leaf rollers on grape bushes, prepare a similar working solution.

In the event of an attack on onions by aphids or bladderpods, treatment should be carried out using drip irrigation with a suspension diluted at the rate of 1 l/ha. To avoid flea beetles and cabbage flies from appearing on sugar beets and cabbage, it is recommended to soak the seeds in a suspension prepared at a ratio of 2 l/ha before planting them in the ground. Winter wheat is sprayed with an insecticide in a proportion of 0.2-025 l/ha. Such measures, carried out during the growing season, create reliable protection against vesicles, aphids, leech, and harmful turtle bugs. Commander also has a detrimental effect on the rapeseed beetle, cruciferous flea beetle, and cabbage aphid, which destroy rapeseed crops. The agrochemical is diluted at the rate of 5 ml per 10 liters of water.

The Komandor remedy for the Colorado potato beetle is used not only before planting, but also when it is detected on the leaves of plants. Treatment is carried out with a solution of 1 mm of the drug and 5 liters of water. This volume is enough to irrigate 100 square meters. m. The waiting period is 20 days. In order not to harm the plantings, it is recommended to use the agrochemical according to the instructions for use.

Purpose:

Commander is a contact-systemic insecticide against a wide range of insect pests: thrips, aphids, miners, Colorado potato beetles, wireworms and other soil pests, cereal flies and other dipterous pests, cruciferous pests, psyllids, whiteflies, bedbugs, butterflies, etc.

Mechanism of action: the drug Komandor is characterized by pronounced systemic activity. For this reason, this drug penetrates into plants through its parts - leaves, stem and roots. Commander, due to its active effect on the nervous system of pests, suppresses the transmission of signals through the central nervous system, the pests first lose motor activity, stop feeding and die within 24 hours. In addition, the drug has contact-intestinal activity.

The action of the drug Komandor concerns both adult insects and pest larvae at different stages of development. Due to the fact that the mechanism of action of Commander is different from the group of pyrethroid drugs, as well as from organophosphorus compounds and carbamates, the likelihood of resistance occurring is reduced. Unlike the group of pyrethroid drugs, Komandor can also be used in conditions of high air temperatures. The drug is relatively resistant to washing off by rain and exposure to sunlight.

Mode of application:

Dissolve the required amount of the drug in a small amount of water, mix thoroughly and bring the volume of water to the desired volume, and mix again.

On ornamental plants against thrips, whiteflies and aphids, the drug consumption is 5 ml per 10 liters of water.

On potatoes against the Colorado potato beetle, aphids and other pests, the consumption of the drug is 2 ml per 10 liters of water.

On cucumbers and tomatoes against whiteflies, thrips and aphids, the consumption of the drug is 5 ml per 10 liters of water

The period of protective action ranges from 15 to 30 days, depending on the type of pest and weather conditions.

Treatment and treatment against diseases

Modern preparations for processing potatoes are generally not highly toxic, but they protect crop plants well from diseases at all stages of their growth. The substances included in the preparations completely disintegrate by the time of harvesting, so processed potatoes are completely safe and edible.

Seed potatoes are soaked or sprayed with chemicals and folk remedies with a fungicidal effect: they have approximately the same effect, the main thing is to choose the correct dosage and rate of consumption of the material.

Before you start treating tubers for diseases, you need to sort them out, selecting those that are unsuitable: too small, sluggish, rotten, with traces of infections. Such specimens are unsuitable for planting. It is necessary to plant healthy, clean, medium and large sizes, with a sufficient number of eyes. All selected potatoes must be disinfected with potassium permanganate before germination: prepare a 1% pink solution and dip the tubers in it for 30-40 minutes.

In addition to potassium permanganate, the following is used to disinfect potatoes:

  • copper sulfate;
  • boric acid;
  • Bordeaux mixture;
  • ash.

By treating potatoes before planting with copper sulfate, it is possible to prevent plant diseases from late blight, scab, and rhizoctonia. Working solution – dilute 5 g (1 tsp) of powder in 3 liters of water. You only need to keep the tubers in it for a couple of minutes and then dry them.

To enhance the effect, you can make a solution of 0.2 g of copper sulfate, 15 g of boric acid and 0.1 g of potassium permanganate per 1 liter of water. Spray root vegetables with this mixture from a spray bottle. If there are only a few of them, the tubers can be soaked in a disinfectant solution for 20 minutes. In this case, it is prepared from the same amount of drugs, but dissolved in 5 liters of water.

To treat potato tubers before planting against late blight and other diseases, ready-made fungicidal agents are used, for example, “Fitosporin”, “Quadris”, “Maxim”, “Immunocytophyte”, “Prestige”. Working solutions of these preparations are prepared in accordance with the instructions, and then dipped into them or sprayed on potatoes from a spray bottle. After spraying with any solutions, it is dried and sent for germination.

“Fitosporin” is one of the main biofungicides used for treating tubers. This drug invariably shows high effectiveness against pathogens: fungi and bacteria that parasitize all crops, including potatoes. To treat the tubers, the spraying method is used, for which a solution is prepared from 0.5 liters of water and 10 g of Fitosporin. About 20 kg of tubers are treated with this amount of solution.

Another popular drug used by gardeners is the complex fungicide and insecticide “Prestige”. It simultaneously increases the potato's resistance to common diseases and protects it from pests, including beetles, thrips, flea beetles, aphids, moths, and wireworms. It is especially effective on potatoes of medium and late varieties; it is effective at least until the end of flowering, after which it disintegrates. The drug is safe for humans, warm-blooded pets and insects, such as bees. Potatoes collected from bushes treated with Prestige are suitable for consumption without restrictions.

In the spring, before planting, you can disinfect the tubers with ash. To do this, prepare the following solution: pour 1 kg of ash into 10 liters of water and soak the potatoes in it for 30 minutes. Or they simply sprinkle the wet tubers with dry ash and plant them in the holes.

How and with what to treat seed potatoes before planting can be seen in the table, where the information is presented in a more visual form.

The best chemical insecticides against the Colorado potato beetle

Domestic and foreign manufacturers produce dozens of products designed to combat dangerous pests.

Preparations for treating tubers

They have a limited period of validity, so after potato seedlings emerge, they will require repeated treatment (with a different insecticide).

Mordants:

  • Prestige - manufacturer Bayer (Germany), tuber protection for up to 1.5 months. Consumption rate: 1 ml of product per 1 kg of tubers. After the expiration date, it decomposes into non-toxic components;
  • Tabu is a complex protection drug, effective against the Colorado potato beetle, as well as wireworms and aphids. Dilute 8 ml of the product in a liter of water; this amount is enough to process 1 quintal of potatoes.

After preparation, working solutions turn pink, which allows you to see which tubers have already been processed and which need to be pickled.

For spraying potatoes

The group of these chemicals is numerous, which makes it possible to alternate them in gardens and prevent the pest from becoming accustomed and developing immunity.

Pyrethroids:

  • Kinmiks - lasts for about a month, causing paralysis in adults and larvae. Used for treatment on all surfaces of leaf blades, the number of sprays per season is 2 times. Available in ampoule form (2.5 ml), in bottles (10 ml). Consumption – 2.5 ml per hundred square meters;

How else to poison the pest? Good reviews from gardeners about Confidor Extra and Grinda powder. A ready-made solution of Biotlin Bau is produced in spray bottles, which is immediately used for spraying.

Hormonal insecticidal drugs

New products help kill insects - hormonal-type insecticides that paralyze beetles and disrupt stages of their life cycle. Refers to contact drugs. Impact:

  • block the process of chitin formation in larvae, which causes the death of the insect;
  • death of the pest during the transition from one stage to another.

The drugs Match, Rimon, Sonet inhibit the synthesis of chitin. Causes sterility of beetles, inability to fertilize, and also disrupts the process of pupation of larvae with the insecticide-hormone Nomolt.

Reviews

★★★★★
Natalia, 29 years old. I've been using only Commander for a long time now.
He managed to prove his effectiveness in practice along with cost-effectiveness of use. All my friends buy it and no one has been disappointed yet. ★★★★★
Sergey, 33 years old. The next morning, absolutely all the old beetles died, and 70% of the young ones died.
After 5 days there were both old and young live beetles, but the tubers were in complete order. For the sake of experiment, I’ll try to increase the concentration, but overall I’m happy with the drug. You should work in a respirator, otherwise at a dosage of 5 ml per bucket you will feel a taste in your mouth and feel a little nauseous. Hide

Commander perfectly fights a wide variety of pests when the recommended dosages are observed. Many gardeners note its effectiveness, thanks to which it is possible to preserve a large number of potato tubers. But the main thing remains not only the correct proportions of the drug, but also its correct, safe use during processing.

How are insecticides used?

The low toxicity of any insect repellent does not mean that it can be used without fear for your health

This means that the purchase and use of such drugs requires compliance with certain precautions.

Spraying potatoes

Let's look at them:

  • it is necessary to purchase only drugs that have been certified and comply with standards
  • It is prohibited to use insect control products that have expired
  • inaccessibility during storage for children or pets
  • storage conditions for drugs must comply with their instructions; it is usually a dry, dark and cool place
  • dissolving the poison in water (or other solvents) is carried out exactly according to the instructions and in the doses indicated there; an overdose of the drug can be very dangerous for both people and the environment
  • each drug is compatible (or not compatible) with any other drugs; this information must be indicated in the instructions; the use of incompatible drugs in the same place at the same time is prohibited
  • Spraying solutions should be prepared only before their use (at the earliest – two hours before spraying)
  • It is best to spray potatoes in the morning or evening in dry weather
  • the person spraying must be dressed in specialized clothing - a suit that protects the skin from possible contact with the drug; the use of protective equipment such as goggles, a respirator and gloves is mandatory
  • during spraying it is forbidden to eat, drink, smoke; It’s also not advisable to talk
  • If the insecticide gets on the skin, it is recommended to wash it off with plenty of running water.
  • the remaining solution must not be poured into the sewer; they need to be poured into a dug hole in the ground somewhere in a vacant lot, then this hole needs to be buried
  • At the end of spraying, it is necessary to wash the sprayer, wash work clothes thoroughly, and the worker himself should take a shower, washing himself with laundry soap
  • each insecticide acts for a certain time; re-processing before this period is not allowed; the time is indicated in the instructions.

Storage rules and expiration date

If you keep the products in unsuitable conditions, their effectiveness will be significantly reduced. As for the Commander, it is stored in a dry place, always inaccessible to children and pets. The room temperature should be from -5 to +30 degrees.

The insecticide should not be stored near food, medicine or animal feed. Including next to towels, linen and/or any other things that a person comes into contact with on a regular basis.

Commander in undiluted form can be stored for up to 36 months (this is its official shelf life). But in any case, you should study when the specific drug purchased was manufactured. If some time ago, its shelf life is significantly reduced.

It is necessary to keep the Komandor product away from fire, otherwise it will deteriorate.

Impact principle

The drug Komandor is a concentrate and cannot be used in its pure form. To combat harmful insects, you should prepare an aqueous solution of this drug according to the norm - as indicated on the bottle in the instructions for its use.

This solution, getting on the foliage or tops of potatoes, is quickly absorbed. In essence, the entire plant becomes poisonous for the duration of exposure to the drug. Imidacloprid, which is lethal to the Colorado potato beetle, dissolves in the sap of the plant; the beetles are forced to feed on this poisoned sap. Once in the insect’s body, the poison quickly neutralizes all vital functions of the insect, as it affects its nervous system.

Advantages of the drug Commander

  1. The strength of the impact does not depend on the ambient temperature or weather. It is equally effective in hot weather and in pouring rain.
  2. The product does not cause hydrolysis, although it is used as an aqueous solution.
  3. The drug is not washed off by rain.
  4. Quickly affects pests.
  5. The validity period is quite long.

As you already understand, Commander is not a contact drug, but a systemic one. Therefore, one treatment of the area is usually enough to ensure that pests no longer appear on it before harvesting.

Precautionary measures

The drug Commander is a poison, has a third class of danger, so it should be used carefully, although it is easy to use. Instructions for safe handling are always included and should be read carefully.

Here we will simply say that you need to wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, and goggles when working with this substance. When spraying an area with a spray bottle, be sure to wear a respirator.

It is important to know that this product is dangerous for bees.

What mistakes can be made?

The use of Commander for processing potato tubers should be strictly in accordance with the instructions.
This is a strong poison, the use of which is used to kill beetles and caterpillars. It is considered a strong remedy with a moderately dangerous substance. While working with it, a person must wear protective clothing, a mask, goggles and gloves so that the drug does not cause harm. After finishing work, you need to wash your hands well, wash with soap, rinse your mouth, and wash your clothes. The drug is compatible with agents for accelerating plant growth. But not with all of them; before use, it is better to study all possible compatible substances.

It is better not to use the product during potato flowering. The toxic substance can be dangerous for bees and bumblebees. And they are friends for gardeners.

When using the product, do not inhale the substance; you must cover your mouth and nose. If poisoning does occur, you need to drink sorbents, activated carbon, and induce vomiting. We need to help the body eliminate it. If your health does not improve, you should consult a doctor.

Potatoes should not be processed in the days before harvest, during rain or strong winds. During this procedure you should not drink, eat or smoke.

It is important to follow simple rules and instructions when working with strong chemicals, then there will be no harm, and the result will please you

General instructions for using “Commander”

An ampoule of insecticide is first diluted in one liter of water. When the drug is thoroughly mixed, you can bring the volume to the desired volume by adding more liquid. Depending on the type of crop being treated, the consumption of the drug varies. The working solution cannot be stored and must be used on the day of preparation. Crops can be sprayed only during the growing season.

Plants are processed in calm, dry weather. The best time to spray is early morning or evening. The period of action of “Commander” depends on weather conditions and the type of pest being destroyed. On average it ranges from two to four weeks.

Treatment of potatoes with Komandor insecticide

Potatoes can be treated against the Colorado potato beetle, aphids and other possible pests in two ways:

  • before boarding;
  • during the growing season.

To treat potatoes against beetles before planting, use a special type of insecticide - “Commander +”.

For spraying, you need to prepare a solution in a ratio of 2 ml of the drug per 10 liters of water. Then the tubers are laid out in one row on a flat surface and irrigated. When they are dry, you can proceed directly to planting. On average, 100 kg of potatoes require one and a half liters of ready-made working solution.

The consumption rate of Komandor for treating potato tops against pests is 2 ml per 10 liters of water. Usually 5-10 liters of working solution is enough to spray one hundred square meters.

Application of the insecticide "Commander" on other crops

  • Tomatoes and cucumbers are sprayed against aphids, bladderworts and greenhouse whiteflies with the following solution: 5 ml of insecticide is diluted in 10 liters of water. This amount is enough to process one hundred square meters.
  • To destroy aphids, mites, moths, moths and leaf rollers on an apple tree, you will need 0.2 liters/ha of the drug.
  • Vineyards against leaf phylloxera, leaf rollers and mites are sprayed with a solution based on an insecticide consumption rate of 0.2 liters/ha.
  • If the onion is attacked by aphids or bladderworts, it is treated using drip irrigation with a solution diluted in the following proportion: 1 liter/ha.
  • To protect sugar beets and cabbage from flea beetles and cabbage flies, crop seeds are soaked in Komandora suspension. The solution is prepared in a ratio of 2 liters/ha.
  • For winter wheat, the insecticide is diluted in a proportion of 0.2-0.25 liters/ha. The solution is sprayed against aphids, pest bugs, bladderworts, and lechs.
  • 5 ml of “Commander” diluted in 10 liters of water will help to destroy the rasposogo shiner, cabbage aphid and cruciferous flea beetle from rapeseed. 0.25 liters is enough to spray 1 hectare.

Treating potato tubers against pests before planting

Insect pests cause serious damage. The main potato pest today is wireworm. They eat into the tuber and destroy young stems. Bacterial and viral infections penetrate into the holes made by the wireworm, resulting in putrefactive processes. The result is a complete loss of presentation and nutritional value of potatoes. Another no less dangerous pest is the Colorado potato beetle. If measures are not taken, the harvest can be lost in a matter of days.

Therefore, in the spring, potato seed tubers are treated (dressed) with special preparations to protect them from the pest.

The following insecticidal preparations are widely used: “Prestige”, “Tabu/Taboo TRIO”, “Prestizhitator”, “Klubneshiet”, “Provotox”, “Commander”, “Terradox”, etc.

"Prestige"

“Prestige” is a leader, in fact the best preparation for early spring processing of potatoes. Produced by German.

Works as an insecticide (fight against wireworms, Colorado potato beetles, aphids - virus carriers, thrips), and as a fungicide (protection against rhizoctonia and common scab).

Active ingredient: imidacloprid 140 g/l, pencicuron 150 g/l. Produced in the form of a suspension concentrate, production volumes - 20 ml., 60 ml., 150 ml. (for personal subsidiary plots) and volumes of 1 liter. and 5l. (for industrial production).

Treatment is carried out with a single spray. Dosage 70–100ml/1l. water. Consumption rate – 1 l. working fluid per 100 kg. seed potatoes. The duration of the drug is up to 2 months from sunrise.

“Taboo”/ “Taboo TRIO”

“Taboo” is an insecticidal preparation for protecting potatoes from sucking and loading insects. A special feature of the drug is a color marker that allows you to visually control the uniform application of the drug.

Active ingredient – imidacloprid 500g/l. Available in volumes of 10ml, 50ml (for private farms) and 1l. and 5l. (for industrial production). The duration of the drug is 1.5 months.

Processing methods:

  • Treating seed potatoes by spraying with a working solution. Dosage 8ml./1l. water, and this is enough to process 100 kg. planting tubers.
  • Irrigation of tubers and the top layer of soil in planting holes/rows at the same time. Dosage 4 ml./10l. water, at a consumption rate of 10 l./100 m2.

Treater "Tabu TRIO" is a three-component preparation for complex protection, combining an insecticide, fungicide and growth regulator.

As part of "Taboo TRIO":

  1. insecticide "Tabu" (4 ml ampoule) - a proven effective insecticide against the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm based on imidacloprid;
  2. the drug "Sinclair" (10 ml ampoule) is a fungicide against various rots. Suppresses soil infections such as rhizoctonia (scab) and fusarium (rot) for a period of 3 months;
  3. the drug “Zerebra” (5 ml ampoule) is a growth regulator based on colloidal silver. Increases immunity, increases productivity, as well as the quality and size of potato tubers.

The packaging is designed to handle 50 kg. potato seed material. Used as a tank mixture of three drugs.

“Commander”/ “Kamandor+”

The drug "Commander" is a complex contact insecticide successfully used to combat thrips, aphids, whiteflies, and other harmful insects.

Active ingredient: imidacloprid 200g/l. The dosage form is a water-soluble concentrate. Packaging 1ml, 10ml, 1l.

The drug is characterized by a quick and effective effect on a persistent potato pest - the Colorado potato beetle, a long period of protective action and a low consumption rate - only 1 ml. per hundred.

The composition of the drug "Commander+" is different in that it is two-component - an insecticide and a growth stimulator "Energen".

Processing methods:

  • Treatment of tubers before or during planting. Dosage 20-25ml/1l. water. Working fluid consumption – up to 10 l/1000kg. tubers (before planting), up to 25l./1000kg. (during landing);
  • Spraying during the growing season. Dosage 10ml./1l. water. Working fluid consumption is 20-40 l./100 m2.

Precautionary measures

When using the drug “Commander”, we must not forget that it is poison. Manufacturers declare hazard class 3 for it. This means that it affects a person moderately, but constant poisoning with microdoses of the drug can cause chronic fatigue syndrome and decreased mental abilities. This applies to adults. In children, the picture is different: this synthetic poison can greatly harm the developing nervous system, impair learning ability and memory.

“Commander” is not safe for pets either. A single high dose will cause severe poisoning, affecting the liver and nervous system. Even microscopic amounts of the drug, constantly entering the animal’s body, reduce appetite and reduce body weight.

“Commander” is lethal for bees; the drug’s hazard class for them is first. Therefore, any spraying is prohibited during the flowering period of plants. The distance to the nearest apiary from the cultivated field must be at least 5 km. The drug also harms the inhabitants of water bodies; it is not used on plantings located in the fish protection zone.

In terms of resistance in soil, “Commander” has a hazard class of 2. What does this mean and what is it fraught with? For the drug to completely decompose in the soil, it takes a long time - about a year. All this time, it can enter plant tissue, albeit in microdoses, and this is unsafe for humans and animals. When treating bushes, do not heavily water the soil under them with the solution.

Advice! In order not to create an excessive concentration of a toxic substance, more than one treatment of plants during the growing season cannot be carried out.

What should you do to prevent spraying bushes or tubers from becoming a reason to consult a doctor due to poisoning?

  • Use protective equipment: respirator, gloves, special suit.
  • Do not process for longer than 3 hours.
  • During this time, do not eat, drink or smoke.
  • After treatment, take a shower and rinse your mouth.
  • Do not appear on the treated area and do not allow pets there during the first 24 hours.
  • Follow the instructions carefully.
