    Beetle eater insecticide: reviews from those who used the product

    Veronica, 44 years old, Samara region: I have been growing potatoes in my garden for many years. It is quite easy to care for, but every year you have to “fight” the Colorado potato beetle. Over the years I have tried many different products. As a result, I have been using only the Beetle Eater for three seasons now - this insecticide quickly destroys these beetles - in one application, not only the adult beetles die, but also their larvae and testicles. I recommend to all.

    Volodya, 50 years old, Moscow region: I have been using the insecticide Beetleworm to treat potatoes in the garden for several years. The product is effective, the beetles die within a few hours, and the plants are protected from the Colorado potato beetle for a couple of weeks. However, if after this the pests appear again - they are brought in from other areas - the treatment must be done again.

    Elena, 36 years old, Volgograd region: I can say that the beetle eater is most effective against the Colorado potato beetle - in recent years I have only used this insecticidal drug. But I want to note that the product is washed off by rain. Therefore, if it rains after treatment, the procedure has to be repeated.

    Beetle beetle insecticide is an effective remedy for controlling the Colorado potato beetle on potatoes. One treatment with the working solution is enough to completely kill not only the adult individuals, but also their larvae and laid eggs.

    That is why this chemical is so popular among Russian vegetable growers - there is no need to constantly treat the vegetative mass of this vegetable crop with other means to get rid of the Colorado potato beetle.

    Preparative form – SC (suspension concentrate).

    Release format/packing – 5 ml ampoule, 9 ml bottle, the drug is protected by the manufacturer from counterfeiting with a special code authentication system.

    The registrant and manufacturer is CJSC Firm “August”, one of the leaders on the Russian market in the development and production of pesticides for plant protection. "August" is a member of the Russian Union of Manufacturers of Plant Protection Chemicals.

    The main advantages and disadvantages of the insecticide

    This drug has become popular among Russian vegetable growers due to its undoubted advantages:

    1. effective at any humidity and air temperature (from +15 to +36 degrees Celsius);
    2. subject to precautions and dosage of the product when preparing the working fluid, the insecticide is practically non-toxic to people and animals;
    3. not toxic to processed vegetable crops if the working solution is properly prepared;
    4. The beetle eater effectively copes with insect pests at different stages of their development;
    5. all Colorado potato beetles die - from eggs to adults;
    6. the beetle-eater does not penetrate into the tubers and is not deposited in them;
    7. the price and quality of the insecticide are quite consistent with each other.

    Mechanism of action of "Zhukoed, SK"

    In terms of action, “Beetle Eater” is an insecticide, in terms of penetration method it is a contact-intestinal pesticide, and in terms of the nature of action it is a systemic pesticide.

    Neonicotinoids have high biological activity, are well accumulated by receptors found in insects, block the transmission of nerve impulses, as a result of which they die from nervous overexcitation. Pyrethroids penetrate the integument of insects, causing rapid destruction, and affect the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death.

    a) Alpha-cypermethrin provides a contact effect, acts instantly (pests stop feeding within 1 hour after treatment and die)

    b) Imidacloprid provides a systemic effect, is quickly absorbed by the leaves and redistributed throughout the vascular system throughout the plant. In addition, imidacloprid provides anti-stress resistance (drought and other unfavorable conditions)

    c) Clothianidin provides distribution and long-lasting protection.

    The duration of the protective effect is 15–20 days.

    The speed of the initial impact is that the pest’s feeding activity ceases within an hour after treatment, and death occurs within 24 hours.

    How does it work?

    The SK beetle has a complex effect on the pest, not giving it a single chance to survive. The drug contains three substances:

    1. Imicloprid
    2. Alpha-cypermethrin
    3. Clothianidin.

    Each part of the insecticide affects the Colorado plant differently.

    • Imicloprid protects the plant and its entire fruit; it penetrates the tissue within two hours. Beetles no longer settle on such a bush.
    • Alpha-cypermethrin is a real poison; it causes direct harm to the insect. This is the most effective component of the drug. After processing the potatoes, the beetles die instantly.
    • Clothianidin acts on the plant at the cellular level, providing its protection for the maximum period.

    Potato plantings can be treated with an insecticide once a season, during vegetative growth. The beetle poison is not washed off by heavy rainfall and its effect does not depend on changes in temperature and air humidity.

    What else can you use to treat potatoes against Colorado potato stripers?

    Measures to combat the Colorado potato beetle can be divided into 4 large groups:

    1. Agrotechnical;
    2. Biologically;
    3. Chemical;
    4. Folk.

    The beetle beetle is a chemical agent, and the arsenal of this group is very wide today. This also includes Confidor, Karate Zeon, Decis Profi, Akarin, Zhukoed, Commander, Regent, Kinmiks, Aktara, Tanrek, Korado, Sonnet. The advantage of chemical agents is that they fight the Colorado potato beetle on the spot. When using traditional recipes, it takes time to see the results. Biologics almost always involve multiple processing times. Agrotechnical methods are good in combination and require regular implementation. But when it comes to intensive growth of the beetle population and a threat to the harvest, it is advisable to resort to the help of chemistry.

    Important! Chemicals are strong toxic substances and can pose a danger to humans, animals, birds, and beneficial insects. They should be used with great care, following the instructions for use, safety precautions and waiting period (days before harvest). In addition, pests are able to adapt to the toxic substance if it is used from year to year, so it is recommended to use different ones.

    As an alternative to chemical agents, modern science has created biological preparations. They are becoming increasingly popular among gardeners due to their gentle effects. These drugs are based on bacteria that inhibit the activity of pests. But they are safe for humans, animals and beneficial insects. The downside is that multiple regular treatments are required, and if the drugs are used over large areas, fighting the beetle becomes a rather labor-intensive task. Nevertheless, such means work and are used more and more often today. Let's list them: Bitoxibacillin, Bicol, Gumi + BTB.

    Agrotechnical control methods are a set of preventive measures for caring for plantings in order to prevent the growth of a pest colony. This includes crop rotation, weed control, early hilling, covering rows with straw, and attracting natural enemies of the Colorado potato beetle (birds, ladybugs, ground beetles) to the site. Targeted colonization of potato plantations with insect predators is also practiced, which in the early stages feed on the eggs and larvae of Colorado potato beetles: lacewings, coccinellids, stink bugs and picromerus.

    In case of a slight spread of pests, it is possible to cope with them using traditional methods: solutions prepared from mustard and vinegar, wood ash, garlic, hot pepper, infusions of elecampane leaves, tomatoes, wormwood, poplar, celandine, dandelions. We described the most popular of them in detail in the article “DS No. 12: Folk remedies for the Colorado potato beetle.”

    It is also practiced to plant plants that repel the beetle: calendula, beans, bush beans, coriander, garlic. You can place bait around the area - potato halves. When pests want to profit from tasty morsels, the baits are collected together with the insects.

    And, perhaps, the most popular and effective folk method of combating the Colorado potato beetle is to manually collect pests in jars with kerosene or saline solution. It is enough to go around the plantings once every 2-3 days and collect parasites to avoid their intensive spread. We have been using this method on Baba Tanya’s plot for about 50 years now. Yes, the bushes can be eaten, but this does not prevent you from harvesting a good potato harvest in the fall.

    Another modern way to repel beetles is spraying with tar soap. A special tar soap “Shoot the Pest” has been created for summer cottages. The magazine “My Plenty of Plenty” recommends spraying potatoes with it once a week.

    Let's return to the "Beetle Eater". I would also like to know your feedback about the drug. Advertising is advertising, instructions are instructions, but in practice everything may turn out differently. We will be glad if you share your experience in the comments. Your experience is important to all of us!
